What should I eat after a 3 day fast?

Greetings Pubaroons,

I just fasted for 3 days striaght because of my IBS (colitis). Just water and healing oils. Now the fast is just about over and i'm wondering what would be wise to eat? Remember my colon is pretty sensitive after not eating for 3 days, so be wise with your recomendations.

I would start with a small piece of fruit, like a half an apple.....maybe follow that up with a banana shake made using only soy milk and a ripe banana ...toss in the blender and sip it slowly.

Avoid whole grains, or gassy vegetables.......then work some protein in.

well the simple carbs taken over time should be ok but i'm no expert....just trying to think of things that are gentle on the gi track.

maybe the best think to do would be to do some research online.

you could always start out with a piece of dry toast, that's what my mom always told me to eat when i had stomach problems.

My sis has colitis and has switched from a raw food diet to one based on traditional Chinese medicine. For breakfast she often has a whole grain, yeastless slice of toast. (as do I.). She eats lots of lightly steamed veggies and brown rice, and has some free range organic chicken or some fish about once a week. For your condition, I would make really watery oatmeal, and cook it for about 20 minutes, and just drink the water to break the fast. Then eat the oatmeal awhile after, then veggies and so on. some light fruit and veggies to break the fast.. like a peach or grapes or something...and something green. Fruit should give you that blood sugar boost and also get your stomach ready for more 'harsh' foods. Fruit is my default answer, because it kicks so much ass.

a 3 day fast isn't really super long, but you should always break a fast with raw fruits and vegetables. Fruits and veggies help detoxify and cleanse the toxins that have accumulated due to the sweeping action of the soft fibers. Do NOT break a fast with meat, bread, junk food, or anything high in processed sugars and/or preservatives.

what's funny is I know all this stuff about nutrition but I don't follow it myself. I mean, it would be great if I could afford to eat healthy, lord knows I would. Healthy food is sooo good. But a good majority of my diet is sandwiches from delis and lots of junk food and candy. But somehow I stay in great shape, so meh.

yes. grapes are the shit. the health benefits are too numerous to mention. But very highy in Resveratrol which is reported in anti-cancer activity, very high in antioxidants, protective anti-clotting effect, protect collagen in the skin, lower blood pressure, reduces "bad" cholesterol, not to mention your vitamins C, E, and beta carotine and on and on. Plus grapes taste so fucken good and humans are meant to eat them. Long live grapes.

Got a question for you...

I have a memorial night dinner with my family and our friends. Plans are made to go to a Japanese Hibachi Restaruant. I was thinking of ordering Miso soup (salty soy bean soup) & vegtable hibachi ( grilled veggies with rice & corn mix). Do you think its fine to eat it for tonight?

IBS (and quite possibly colitis) is caused by stress.  Doctors always try to treat things 'head on' instead of going to the source.  Chinese herbalists have a bit of a better idea, but even they sometimes try to take things head on (which is fine most of the time, using herbs anyway.) 

Do you stress a lot?  Experience excess anxiety?
I've got IBS, and let me tell you, ive tried a lot of things. I've got a 'temporary' solution of fibre right now which allows me to actualy 'live', but after much research i've connected it all (including my allergies) to anxiety/stress.
If your condition persists, try a strong herbal anti-anxiety supplement.
(altho, this is still only a temporary solution.)

Green Tea as a antioxidant liquid & Camomile Tea as a intestinal calmer.

When I felt really weak I drank some organic apple juice. It gave me alot of energy.

Oh & small doses of ginseng every other day.

but i'm a cool cat unless someone disturbs my rythem. So very rarely do I get upset.

I did go to a chinese doctor in Canada once and he gave me an interesting insight on my condition...I wrote it in my journal that I must find...i'll post it as soon as I do.
