OK, so I want to make a grow room. AND A LAB

and I work at an alternative school and have been teaching students to grow Oysters.  And my director says, make two 8x10 structures: a lab and a grow room.

Questions: 

1. What kind of plastic do you use to drape the molded (metal/pvc framework) ?
2. What is the insulation you use to surround the visqueen/plastic surrounding?
3. I have followed Jermemy D. and Cryogenic's thread. And many others. Wher do I go from here?
4.  If I want to give some of my maintance friends details on how to do this, who can give me direction?

If you have a school budget and maintenance department, I'd suggest a 20 foot shipping container buried underground.  I'm in the process of building mine now, but I got a 40 foot container.  Having it underground keeps it at the right temperature for edibles all year. 

Here's a shot of how I temporarily supported the roof before piling the dirt on.  Be sure to use some sort of load bearing support or it will cave in.

Did you rent that excavator, or hire a company? Or do you have things like that just sitting around?

I hired a local excavation contractor to come out and dig the trench.  The same company delivered the shipping container.

Actually I don't have a school budget and maintenance department.  We're a non-profit private school eeking out an existence on grants.
Maintenance is a guy who comes in on weekends to do stuff on an hourly basis.  And he's reluctant to build a visqueen style quonset hut, because we're on the Oregon coast and he thinks the wind will tear it apart.  I have about $900 to spend and may settle for a metal shed from Sears.  But it's really cool to see your newest project, RR.  I bet that's going to keep you busy this summer.

If you go with a metal shed, put it in the shade and cover the roof with several inches of straw.  You can set up a sprinkler to spray the straw several times per day and it will cool the shed via evaporation.  Edibles get long and stringy when the temps get much over 65F, so keep things nice and cool for best results.  Put fluorescent or LED lights inside. 

I love the Oregon coast, but it gets awfully hot and dry there in the summer, so be sure to take precautions to keep your growing area nice and humid/cool.

Thanks RR!  Yes, we are entering our seasonal monsoon drought. I officially made myself a slave to the water hose yesterday, now that I've got the garden started. 

We've had such hard north winds lately (consistent 40 mph) that our ocean temps have dropped to 45 degrees - something I've never seen before.

$900 That's a tight budget, is that just for the grow room and lab? Do you need lab equipment on that budget? If so you'll likely have to consider the cost of a flowhood and either to get one or not.

Hey Arago,
Have you considered starplate structures? Kind of similar to a goedesic dome but quite a bit cheaper.
They are distributed by an outfit called Stromberg chickens. You don't get the whole structure just the plates, depending on the lenght of the 2 by 4s you could get a fairly large area on the cheap. If you can get some local lumber yards to donate it would be quite affordable.

you may consider making an amalgamated structure. Perhaps even looking at getting more money upfront. Unless you are teaching students about mycology in the summer I can see that more money upfront could save on heating problems. I'm assuming based on your geographic location that you will have harsh weather from December-February... or so? RR would probibly know better since he lives near by.

Given the seasons of school, if you do not run the program in the summer, you need to consider burying something like RR has. Perhaps looking for a generous machine owner could help at least get a deal on the excavation or... relying on student (slave) labor:shrug:. What is the price on shipping containers in the area anyway? Seems if it's reasonable enough you could use one instead of buying a metal shed. If you got the container now you could raise money or get more from the school to bury it later. So it may be more advantageous to look at longterm plans for your setup, perhaps. It's possible that you could use the materials to generate revenue to pump back into the setup as well. Just something to consider.

I was going to recommend a cheap greenhouse structure like this, but given the winds it sounded like a dumb idea.

fuck, i'm jealous of that RR...  That is awesome.  $900 isn't much to work with, especially if you're trying to set up a flowhood in your lab, and automated fanning/misting apparatuses in your grow room.  Cut costs wherever you can, hehe, build your own flowhood.  If you build it yourself, you can get a $900 flowhood for about $150-200.  good luck, and keep us posted on whats going down with all this.

Wow! Thanks for all the suggestions, guys.  We started digging for the concrete pad last weekend.  The metal shed has already been ordered and should arrive June 15th. 

ScavengerType, a used shipping container is about $2,600, way beyond my budget.  However that backyard greenhouse is just what I was looking for originally and I think I can make one in my backyard this summer. So, thank you. If it blows down on my watch, I can always rebuild it. 

And the lab is going to be on hold for awhile.  I had great hopes that a grant I had written was going to provide a flowhood and a good fogger for the the grow room.  But there seems to be no motion on that one. 

NWRainmaker, that starplate structure's kind of cool.  Really similar to a tent I have.  Meanwhile, sometime after the 15th, let's go here:

So thanks for the encouragement everyone.  I imagine my next worry will be the humidification system. 

So far we've grown lots of oysters with low-tech beginnings.  Those hand-held misting bottles do wonders!

Maybe you could write to some of the mushroom growers associations , etc and see if they have any help available. Maybe they have some used items they would give you for free or maybe even start up money seeing that this is for educational purposes.

Three to four inches of gravel works wonders.  Just spray it with the hose a time or two per day.  You can get styrofoam insulation sheets to cover the inside of the metal shed to cut way down on the heat in the summer and keep it warm in the winter.

RR in your shipping container.. How come you needed to support the roof?? Don't them containers get filled with pallets of heavy materials, cars and all kinds of other very heavy things that sit on the floor?? Wouldn't that put weight on the container roof right under it? I know you would be burying it under the frost line so a very heavy amount of dirt will be on top.. But I thought those shipping containers could withstand such amounts of weight?? Sorry to hijack this thread...

Shipping containers aren't meant to have weight on top of them, just inside of them. The corners are stronger on most so they can be stacked on ships and trains.

Yea thats what I mean if they can have many containers stacked ontop of them how come they cant have dirt stacked on them?? I understand when they are stacked most of the weight is distributed around the edges. But if the containers have alot of heavy things inside them and they are stacked ontop of each other how come the floors and roofs don't bow..

The strength of shipping containers is the frame, not the sheet metal covering.  That's why the sheet metal roof needed beefing up.
