Monotubs and Wax Paper Please help..especialy RR!!!!
    #10321017 -

I know this has probably been answered like 100 times but I need help please as this is my first attempt ever at growing shrooms(I have read like 1000 posts before starting!!!)

I removed my monotubs from the black plastic bags after they had colonized and exposed to light and FAE.

The Humidity has dropped to 87-89% and my temp range is 73 to 75 Degrees F so I layed a crumpled sheet of wax paper on top of Substrate and misted lids and sides.

I did this because Im worried about Low Humidity not allowing pinning.

I plan on changing Wax paper every two days and misting top and sides when I do.

QUESTION: Is this a good Idea to initiate pinning in my Monotub???

or should I ditch the wax paper and:

Maybe put the fan on a timer and turn it off when lights are off??

Or maybe take fan out of closet and point at closed doors instead??

Any advice at all about anything Im doing or should be doing is greatly appreciated as this is my first grow of any kind!!!

Another question is: once pins form I understand I need to lower humidity to around 85% for fruiting...whats the best way to do this????

Heres some details and pics...more are available at my grow log which is here:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10175508

Heres the Cambodians and Z-Strain at Ten Days...time to introduce Fresh Air to induce pinning and place under 12/12 light(Two 40 Watt 4 Foot Fluorescent tubes-6500 Kelvin)

I took the tubs out of the trash bags took off lids and fanned vigorously for 5 minutes to reduce CO2,took pictures, misted lids and sides of tubs and replaced lids...this is the ONLY time I will be fanning. I have a fan in closet on low speed to circulate air and aid in Fresh Air Exchange.

Im worried about the fan lowering humidity too much so I placed a sheet of crumpled up wax paper over top of substrate to maintain high humidity.

With the fan providig lots of Fresh Air Exchange im afraid it will lower humidity too much to induce pinning so thats why I decided to use the Wax paper method. I will replace it every two days...

CAMBODIAN Monotub:

Closet with light, monotubs and fan(I only opened doors to take pictures)

Z-STRAIN Monotub:

UPDATED 5/10/09

Heres a pic of eq's on day ten. looks like maybe a week to ten days more till ready to put under light...so back in trash bag it goes...

Guess using the PF jars and shredding them onto Compost as well as the 1 to 3 spawn Sub/Ratio really is slowing things down!!!

opening the monotubes is a big factor of the loss of moisture.
The whole concept is to forget about it. i think by constantly opening the monotub and misting and fanning you are causing more trouble than your preventing.

I only opened once to check for contams and give a blast of fresh air to induce pinning when I initialy took out of bags...I had planned on not opening again at all till I noticed Humidity drop and added wax paper...

Do you think I should just forget about the wax paper and leave closed and hope humidity goes back up???

There is about a 1/2 inch of standing water at bottom of tubs outside of bag liner...but no visible condensation on lids or sides..so that leads me to believe humidity isnt the 99% needed for pinning...as well as my reptile digital humidity gauge showing 87-89% Humidity(it showed 99% while tubs were colonizing rye spawn to compost in trash bags)

When changing Wax paper I dont plan to fan just open lid and change as quickly as possible and mist lid to replace any moisture lost by opening it...is that a good idea???

So what to do???

Is that standing water on top of the sub? definately not what you want.  From what I understand, evaporation of water will cause pinning to initiate.  I fanned mine 3 - 4 times a day and lightly mist twice.  I do not use wax paper, but I also use a casing layer.  keep up the fae and you will start to see pins

Thanks...I removed the wax paper and turned the fan down to low and now my humidity is back up at 99%. Hopefully pins will follow soon!!!

Sub is glistenig which I guess means water is evaporating off it??? which should help pinning...There was a slight pool of water which I soaked up with a paper towel tip....

Question?? Once pins form whats the best way to drop humidity to 85% for fruiting or is this neccesary???

Since its a Monotub I wont be Fanning ...or should I be once pinset happens?????

You don't need to drop humidity. That's old outdated information.
