casing layer question for agar,rr,road kill etc

ok my question is lets say i have a pretty big tub 78 quarts and i am putting horse manure at 7 maybe 7 and a half inches of substrate no holes on the sides or anything like that i fan 4-5 times a day and have been getting really good results with it my question is why would i need a casing layer on this since this would be a sealed tub wouldn't the lid be kind of acting like a casing layer and keeping everything good and moist ?


off of that tub i have been averaging about 8-10 o's dry first flush
just wondering if the casing layer is needed in this situation.thanks guys

well im neither agar,rr,road but i do count myself in for the etc.

7 inches of shit is a massive sub, if that didnt give you nice yields id say you do
something terribly wrong.

as i understand from your post, you did this without a casing layer and it worked just fine,
good. cubensis does not need a casing layer, and you experienced that yourself,
however it can improve dramatically if it has one.

see the casing layer provides accomplishes three things, first of, it seals the moisture
from the underlying substrate and keeps evaportion from the substrate from happening.
second, it provides extra moisture, third it creates a micro climate for the myc to develop
pins in.

also, which is very nice, as the casing layer is non-nutritious, you can control
breakthrough of mycelium
precisely before switching to fruiting which gives you near total control over your pinset and therefor yield !

its up to you.

You can only benefit with a properly prepared casing layer. With 7" of substrate, a 1.5-2" casing would be ace.

7 to 7.5 inches of substrate is massive.

I used to do some of those type of grows a few years back...
but decided to stick with 3 to 5 inches of substrate instead.

The thicker substrates of over 5 inches generate alot of heat...
and need to be kept in lower temps than thinner ones...during colonization.

As ohm already told you...
You don't need a casing layer with horse poo.
Cubensis will do just fine without a casing layer.
In fact some of my largest mushrooms have been from bulk substrates of horse poo without a casing layer.

RR has talked about putting a layer of wax paper down on top of the bulk substrate of horse poo to make a micro climate like a casing layer.
and then remove the wax paper after you have pins coming up through the surface of the bulk substrate.
I would suggest trying this method.
Maybe RR will chime in and talk a little more about that in this thread for you.

One of the advantages that you will get from using a casing layer is...
you will usually get a better pin set.
and your fruits might be more uniformly spread.

Some examples...

cased bulk substrate of horse poo...








compared to uncased....










I lost alot of my pictures due to a computer crash...
so I don't have the larger fruit ones from non cased bulk substrates that I used to have in larger tubs.

but you can see the difference.

I will say this...
if you wanna try and grow huge fruits...
Don't use a casing layer on bulk horse poo.
My largest uncased Orrisa Indias were in the 21 to 22 inch range with caps as large as dinner plates.

oh...

and I never use a casing layer thicker than 1" no matter what thickness of my bulk substrate is.

the old charts for casing layer thickness is way off...IMHO
