I also think its worth noting that American television is pretty much the standard, world wide.

Network television conveys a very poor set of moral values, to the rest of the world + i imagine many of us take it to heart that America is a combination of "the biggest loser", "CSI", "family guy", "fox news," "BET" and "MTV"

Also worth noting - in South America, people would often assume i was American and equated that with having lots of money and big houses.

you see, that's another big misconception.

american has lots of money, americans by and large are loosing their homes, or will probably be renting their entire lives, allowing the saving of no money.

there's plenty of money, but it's all clustering together in the wrong places.

Honestly if I had to sum it up I'd have to say that Americans live fatter than anybody else on the planet and that's why everybody's jealous. :shrug:

Our government's fucked, but whose government ISN'T fucked? We've got some stupid people, but how is that not a statistical inevitability for any country? In the meantime we really do have the best minds from around the world and a ridiculously high standard of living in general, which will only get better once we do the sensible things and legalize drugs and institute socialized health care. And everybody will still hate us for having no "culture" (i.e. castles from 1000 years ago) or "class" (i.e. segregation of the poor from the rich). Sorry, but we're the shit. Deal.

I agree with many points here. And to add to the having no "culture" - well... I think we have a lot of culture, just not in the same sense as many other nations. I mean EVERYTHING is written in english AND spanish nowadays... are whites even majority anymore? I'm sure they are, but honestly, minorities make a large percentage of the population. Does that happen in China? I bet like 95% of China is chinese... same with germany, or whatever country. We just don't have culture in the same sense of the word as other nations, like castles and whatnot. But what do you expect from a country that's existed for only ~200 years. Esp. when the people before lived off the land unlike many other nations of the world at that time.

It's easy to pick on America. Come up with something creative yet true about Americans and I'll shake your hand and say you are right.

edit: oh, and our lack of culture, I also blame the immigrants.

Most of the American citizens I've met were very nice people who were at their worst a little in-polite by not offering a returning "thank you" or "Your welcome" or what have you as seems to be fairly customary here, and not in the states.

To be a generalist if anything I would say that most Americans are viewed by the rest of the world to have a very self centered approach to life. In the sense that they only are truly concerned with what affects them on a personal level and the rest is usually seen as superficial.

Its why I find it a bit odd, in these parts you can almost always count on your neighbor (or more often usually a random passer by) to help you with getting your car out of the snow in the middle of the night, or offer a bathroom or phone in time of drastic emergencies lol
