Well I'm American and I can appreciate your point of view but I'd like you to specifically address which you like least: America as a country and its ideals and morals or the American people and their ideal and morals.

I agree most media in the country is biased and clouded in its reporting and often brainwashes the masses into a particular (and usually close-mined) point of view on certain global issues.

What do you think of the new leadership? Did you buy into the "obama hype machine" that swept the US and most of europe? Did you just not want to see another US president that was an old white guy? Did you think McCain was a better candidate? or were you completely indifferent and neither president would make a difference in the tarnished view you have on the country?

I'm sure you have pride in your own country but it was once just an island prison for british people so at one time im sure everyone thought austrailians were a bunch of scallywags and rubbish.  .... so I guess some things never change! AHHH no im kidding...I have a good buddy from Queensland and I must say I love austrailia for their amazing beer commercials. Top Quality.

As a Canadian working with a bunch of Americans I find them no different than myself.

It's usually them that will point out the differences between us.

But I work with people who come out of the northeast and california.

I would be banned if I said what I thought about the majority of people from the south/midwest.  I understand the majority may be only 51%, but those 51% are going to be responsible for the deaths of most of the world's population.  Be it due to nuclear or conventional wars, they fucking love to kill.

[edit] - just to clarify:  I would totally get along with a hyper-conservative bible-thumping southerner.  But I definitely do not agree with them.  They have a deep culture that I can respect, but I just find their politics and religion to be stupid.

I (an American) used to think America was overall a mentally deficient and rowdy batch of crass morons.

Now I know better. I wish we'd embrace socialism like Europe, but other than that the only significant difference between the American and European ethos is that the higher-class Europeans are much better at hiding their lower classes. And their lower classes generally make our much more visible hillbillies and rednecks and hippies and gutter trash look refined and sophisticated.

So really, talking shit about crass, stupid Americans while ignoring the chavs outside and watching "Friends" makes you a fucking hypocrite.

You can't really talk about america as a whole, it just doesn't make sense. There are many beautiful people in this country, and yeah there are a lot of people with there heads of their ass (me).

But any country I've been to, there have been beautiful people as well as assholes :shrug:

If you're talking the american government, yeah  :flipthebird: the goverment.

I am Canadian and based on country of origin - if you were to tell me i was about to meet an american, i might imagine them as fat, conservative, religious, brainwashed and out of touch with reality.

I would generalize americans to be pretty crappy in general.

However, my trips down the West Coast have had me meeting very cool people. I found strangers to be helpful and accomodating, nearly always + even the police treated me well.

VERY different story in the east.

I think lowly of how America is, in general. I think of consumption, control, manipulation, fear, and segregation when i think of words to describe America.

I know in Australia - americans are VERY looked down upon, aswell.

That said - if your cool/kind hearted, your ok in my books.

i think the classic generalizations of americans tends to forget, among many, many other things, that the makeup of american culture is predominantly that of the cultures that built it, and continue to build it.

when some picture an american, they see an overweight, white christian with a loud mouth, forgetting that beside every one of those stands a first, second, third generation or more latino, indian, asian who influences just as much the national character.

a hundred years ago, it was the same with the irish, italian, etc.

Really? Clearly you haven't experienced the better side of America. To be completely honest, it's all about who you surround yourself with. If you surround yourself with positive people, you will be positive and have a positive experience. Same holds true for negative.

I would hope that not only this forum be a database of knowledge, but also be a place where you learn about people too. Realize that we're all not so different, and to realize that not everything is as it seems when youre looking in from the outside. I meet and talk to interesting and amazing people here every day from all over the world, that's a pretty amazing thing and shouldn't be taken for granted.

You obviously didn't read the rest of my post saying i've met super cool americans.

To add, possibly misleading creedence to the argument - i remember when i was touring macchu pichu, there was a grossly overweight, hilariously arrogant, loud mouth american woman annoying everyone and asking stupid questions.

Unfortunately, i've been in similar situations a few times over.

If hitchhiking through the states, and passing through over 30 states is any measure - the amount of conservative, republican, fearful, rightously patriotic people, religious freaks, or bigots is disproportionate compared to the amount of, what i would consider "well balanced and well intentioned people."

I dont think i am the only one who has noticed this.

However - the west/midwest is pretty alright.

But to be fair, i like/dislike people, not nationalities.
