The cooker took the FT Climate Change Challenge crown after beating 300 other creations, including a food additive which stops cows passing wind.

The Kyoto Box oven - which costs just £3.50 to make - can cook casseroles, boil water and bake bread.

It is made from two boxes, one inside the other with an acrylic cover, which lets the sun's power in and traps it.

Black paint on the inner box and silver foil on the outer help concentrate the heat while a layer of straw or newspaper between the two provides insulation.

It is the brainchild of Kenya-based entrepreneur Jon Bøhmer.

Mr Bøhmer, a Norwegian, set up Kyoto Energy with his Kenyan wife Neema, and has used his own money to fund the project.

The oven is targeted at the three billion people who use firewood to cook in developing countries.

Mr Bøhmer said: "We're saving lives and saving trees. I doubt if there is any other technology that can make so much impact for so little money."

He plans to use the prize to conduct mass trials in 10 countries, including South Africa, India and Indonesia and gather data to back an application for carbon credits.

The box aims to save some of the millions of children who die each year from food cooked with unclean drinking water.

He believes it will also halve the need for firewood, saving an estimated two tonnes of carbon per family per year.

He has now developed a more robust, longer-lasting cooker in corrugated plastic, which he says can be mass-produced as cheaply as the cardboard version.

The oven narrowly beat the animal feed additive Mootral from Neem Biotech, UK, to take the title.

Mootral, which is derived from garlic, cuts the methane produced by cows, sheep and other ruminants.

Animal methane is estimated to be responsible for 20% of global warming.

Would have to be the other way around, right?

Black paint on the inner box and foil on the outside wouldn't make much sense.

I suppose its the application of the device that is more important.  That's pretty much how it is with everything nowadays though.  The lone inventors rarely/if ever make anything completely new - its always an adaptation of an old idea.

All the high-tech interesting inventions are made by large groups of specialists but that's what is required when most of the easy stuff has been done already.

OMG! That's exactly what I did.  Painted the inside of a used coffe can black, played around with mylar until I got it to "focus" light around the can into the center.

The thing worked wonderfully.  Didn't win any awards though. :frown:

The outer box reflects the sun's rays while the inner box absorbs them and must be black. The insulation is under the inner box to support it.

The goal could be to have the inner layer absorb the sun's radiation to heat the device, the insulation to retain the heat by preventing conduction and convection, and the foil to reflect radiation back inside the oven.

The energy comes in through the acrylic window, not through the outside of the box.

I also wonder about what makes this thing so special.  As has been mentioned, this doesn't seem like some revolutionary design, and the writeup doesn't explain how this is better than the thing middle and elementary school children have been making for years.

Yes, I understand now.

I had it pictured differently when I made my post.

I didn't see the part about the window and assumed it was just two boxes, one nested inside the other.

"I didn't see the part about the window and assumed it was just two boxes, one nested inside the other."

It is that but there is room between the two boxes. Light comes in the window, hits the inner box, is reflected by the foil, hits the inner box and makes it hot. The insulation can only be on the bottom. If it was all over the box then it would not be able to absorb the sun's heat.

Right, I thought the box was entirely enclosed, w/out a window.

Which is why I thought you would want the outer box black, in order to absorb as much light/heat as possible.

You could put insulation around the outer box to keep the heat in.  It's like a heat trap. Heat goes in but can't get out and builds up.

Yeah I did that in fifth grade. Cardboard box, saran wrap, black construction paper and foil. Made some nachos.

i personally have never done this but it seems like a great idea for people in underdeveloped countries with large amounts of sunlight. solar really is the way to go, so much energy everyday, just how to focus it?

has anyone ever heard of fresnel lenses? maybe work some of those into the oven, its what i use to take solar bizzong hits and it will burn concrete if sunny enough

I think it's a great idea for everyone lol. It saves tons of electricity. Next to the fridge, AC/heat, and dryer (another wasteful technology), the range oven is a huge user of power. There's all this talk about helping those "poor people" over there, but we need some help right here. That electricity might be cheap now, but it's not infinite (thank god for the sake of the planet).

I have a simple sun oven and it's really easy to use, don't have to worry about your food being burnt, and heats up to 350F fast as long as it's not cloudy out.

I never really realized what Fresnel lenses were. I have a shower curtain that is just a bunch of tiny Fresnel lenses. I put some of it up over my windows in the kitchen for privacy and I've been wondering why the kitchen has been so god damn hot when the sun hits it lately. I guess I know now.

If you're interested I bought it at Target. Took some getting used to, kinda gave me a headache the first few days.

A fresnel lens has the same effect as a normal lens...  That is, it concentrates light that hits it.  So although it might bring more of the light that hits it to a small area, the total amount of energy entering your kitchen is the same or less.

It's only hotter because either the shower curtain is absorbing a lot of light going through it and re-radiating it as heat, it's blocking a significant portion of heat from being re-emitted out the window, or it's just hotter or sunnier outside.  =]
