How to make a DOS/win 95 proggy run on XP?
    #2805885 - 06/18/04 04:00 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Alright, i'm having some serious problems. One of my older games (Xcom, Xcom:TFTD) isn't running correctly. I mean, firstly, it hauls ass. That i've got figured out. But when playing, it has a nasty tendency to *twitch* back to previous states of the game....completley destroying continuity/playability.

Anyone know of a way to make something designed for a 16 bit system run on a 32? Compatibility settings aren't working....and the program is designed for DOS.

Emulators, mebbe? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Got a simple solution for you.

Right click on the .exe and goto properties.
Goto the Compability tab.
And under "compatibality mode" select whatever your trying to run it for, which would be win 95 as you said.

Hope that works for you. If it dosen't then your only other option would probably to to get an emulator as you said. Good luck!

If compatibility settings aren't working, all I can think of is to dual-boot to DOS or Win9X. However you might want to check out Xenocide or Laser Squad Nemesis instead. They're both DirectX and will run fine in XP.

Sometimes (donno why) the compatibility setting won't work unless that program was intalled on a FAT filesystem rather than an NTFS filesystem. For small programs, you can usually use the system save partition (HP/Compaq/others?).

I did this with my copy of Xcom and it worked great! The only other problem I had after that was with my soundcard. I needed to install my old creative board because the game would not work with my turtle beach. I had both sound cards installed and the game worked fine after that.

There is actualy a 'fix' for this sound problem....its called 'VDMS'.

You gotta do a search, but its basicaly for running old dos games with proper sound under Win95+

It worked for Xwing.  =D
