Here is another way www.screensavers.com
Make Messenger scram
1. Go to your Programs folder. 2. Rename the Messenger folder to MessengerNo or MessengerIHateYou or MyNameIsMrHappy. Messenger will no longer load when you open Outlook.
To get your Messenger back, just rename GodzillaAteMyPants back to Messenger and all will be restored. Especially your dignity.

isn't there a problem with that method though? if messenger doesn't run, outlook will lag horribly because its looking for it?

Could be, I have not tried it. I saw this on screen savers and shared it.

All I ever had to do was to open up Outlook Express and turn messenger off there! - Open Outlook.. then click Tools/Windows Messenger/Options/Preferences Tab/ Make sure to uncheck "run this program when windows starts". This removes it completly from being loaded.
I never had a problem disengaging it this way- not one issue.
After all, this guy has used Yahoo Messenger for many years... and Im sure not switching to Bill Gates messenger just cuz he wants to stick it in the startup.

Just to clarify, there is Windows Messenger the application, and some other service called windows messenger, they are separate things. Just one of those things that happens when you have a bunch of people working independently for one product. Also, Microsoft messenger has an option to not load at startup.. look in options/preferences for a "load messenger at startup". Installs for products that 'require' messenger may change this setting without notifying you, so you'll have to turn it off again. I thought I experienced that a few times but am not sure.

Start -> run -> msconfig -> services
then go through the list find messenger (not MSN messenger with the green and grey icon that sits in the corner, although its nice to get rid of it too) and disable it.

Before I found this thread I had tried everything I could think of to disable the fucking Messenger, to no avail. What finally worked was the method as described by Compiler. There is no lag time in starting Outlook either. If anything, Outlook and Explorer launch more quickly now.

There is an option in Outlook Express for default instant messaging clients.
I had a bit of trouble, having AIM open all the time..or at least once I open OE.
You must uncheck the boxes in OE, reinstall AIM, and say NO to turning it into your default messaging program.
