Oravive - Fluoride Free Toothpaste

I just got my tube of the Citrus flavor in the mail.

I'll give it a review after using it tonight and another review added on after a week of use.

This product uses NovaMin as its active ingredient.

I'll be using Arm & Hammer Age Defying Toothpaste (ACP) in the mornings and Oravive at night. I really don't know what to expect from this product. We'll see.

NovaMin isn't a chemical. Its a mineral compound.

"NovaMin is the brand name of a particulate bioactive glass that is used in dental care products. It was developed and patented by NovaMin Technology, Inc.. In aqueous solutions, NovaMin consists of 45% SiO2, 24.5% Na2O, 24.5% CaO and 6% P2O5.

NovaMin delivers an ionic form of calcium, phosphorus, silica, and sodium which are necessary for bone and tooth mineralization. When microscopic particles of NovaMin are exposed to water, they release mineral ions that become available for the natural remineralization process. The ions form hydroxyapatite crystals, a form of hard and strong mineral in teeth.[1]

Every fluoride-free toothpaste I find has xylitol in it instead.. I hate that stuff.. tastes nasty and takes forever to rinse out.

Oravive Citrus Flavor
Ingredients:
Glycerin(Vegetable origin), Silica, PEG 400, Calcium Sodium Phosphosilicate (NovaMin), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Flavor, Carbomer, Potassium Acesulfame, Mica, FD&C Yellow #6

The site says they are making an "all-natural" version for people who don't want artificial sweetner and SLS in their toothpaste. The "natural" version will probably use xylitol as the sweetner and some natural foaming agent.

I'm sure that the other 2 flavors of the regular stuff have the same ingredients since the flavoring is just labeled as "flavor".

I found a code for a buy one get one free deal but it was only valid on the new citrus/orange flavor. Total came out to $11.90 including shipping for 2 tubes. A friend and I split the cost and paid $5.95 each for a tube. The normal price is $7.95 plus $3.95 shipping.

I tried it a few hours ago and its nice. It doesn't feel like normal toothpaste, less foamy. With this product you are supposed to spit when you are done brushing but not rinse. There's no fluoride or other stuff that is toxic if swallowed so its not a big deal. Only thing that kinda sucks is that you aren't supposed to eat or drink for 30 mins after brushing to give the mineral ions time to stick to your teeth.

You can use it 2-3 times daily but I've heard it is also recommended to use nightly and use a normal toothpaste in the morning. These things work together since Oravive helps remineralize teeth while the fluoride strengthens the new enamel layer.

I've tried the xylitol toothpastes but I hate the sickly sweet film it leaves in your mouth. Oravive left a minty orange taste and a very slight gritty feeling which disappeared after 2 or 3 minutes.

You might want to look into the effect glycerin has on teeth. It's the first ingredient in that tooth paste, and has been said to prevent the very thing that NovaMin would be so great for, if it weren't for the presence of the glycerin. (Remineralization.)

I've read up on glycerin. Seems that NovaMin still works with the glycerin added.

The glycerin supposedly stops the minerals in your saliva from contacting your teeth. In this case it would help make the NovaMin particles stick to your tooth surface after brushing.

All I can say is that after about 8 brushing with Oravive my teeth and gums feel better than they ever had with regular toothpaste.

I still use A&H Age Defying toothpaste in the mornings and Oravive at night.

I had a few teeth that were sensitive to cold drinks that aren't bothering me as much anymore. A 60% or so decrease in the sensitivity after only 4-5 days of use.

The only downside I see to Oravive is the fact that I have to pay $4 shipping on an $8 tube of toothpaste.

I might just order the 6-pack after this tube is done to save on shipping costs.

Hmm, interesting.

That does make some sense... because the mineral content is IN the toothpaste instead of coming from the diet via saliva.

However, it seems kind of silly, because you could just cut out the glycerin and the NovaMin (by using water and baking soda, for instance) and then you would just naturally absorb minerals from your food intake via saliva exposure.

BUT... I guess that, as long as the glycerin's anti-mineralization properties fade with time, it can't hurt to supplement your mineral intake this way.

However, I would be worried that the glycerin exposure in general is preventing me from taking in any minerals via saliva, (ie, 24 hrs a day) in which case I would think one would be better off without it.

Either way, thank you for relaying your experiences with it. :smile:

My roommate uses baking soda and sea salt so he has some grit.  I've been using it and after overcoming the salty taste, enjoy it quite a bit.  During strawberry season, baking soda and strawberry mush is the way to go.  You don't need much to brush your teeth.
