The Heart and Healer
    #10068189 -

okay so i have pondering a couple questions lately...

does the process of helping others involve opening our heart? does it involve releasing the healer within us? what would be the healer within?

also, how do you invariably help yourself by helping others in a pure genuine spirit of giving (pure altruism)? what are the benefits?

chaaaaaaaao.

Well, presumably others would similarly follow this ethic and end up helping you as a side effect of serving others.  Also, your natural cheer and altruistic desire would probably radiate from your person; people want to be around helpful and good hearted people so you would most likely make a lot of new friends and find many potential helping hands to fall back on in times of duress.

You do it your way.
There is no curriculum to follow.
That is .. doing from the heart... when it is sincere.
Despite what some new age teachings will say..

You either love.. or you dont.

That is.. unless you had a different direction with your question.

>does the process of helping others involve opening our heart?

Not necessarily.  You can give a dollar to a homeless person while despising them.

>does it involve releasing the healer within us?

It might.  In my opinion, you can't truly help someone until you have solved at least a few of your own issues.  Otherwise, you'll make a mess of things.

>what would be the healer within?

Yourself.

>how do you invariably help yourself by helping others in a pure genuine spirit of giving (pure altruism)?

Some would argue that pure altruism does not exist.  Giving seems enough to me.  Trying to figure out whether you or someone else has a "pure genuine spirit" seems useless to the task.

>what are the benefits?

Possibly inner contentment and peace.  I'd be careful if that were my motive however.

giving a dollar to a homeless person isn't helping them. Clothing, feeding, and giving them shelter, would be helping them. I would think that takes a pretty open heart.

When you love yourself, is when you can share that love with other people. That is how you can achieve true alturism. You're not helping people to feel better, to help yourself, or to sway the forces of karma to your side, you're helping people just because.

The healer inside of you, is you. When you have accepted you for you, and the world for the world, it really makes sense that compassion is pretty right on :mushroom2:

Inner strength as a man or woman is another thing to look at. You need to be a strong person to put others before yourself, with no reward incentive.

Love is a groovy thing

these are each and all descriptions and metaphors for the same thing:
i.e.
"opening the heart"
means becoming sensitive and or caring
(but you can beneficially use a yoga visualization if it does not add confusion to the metaphor)

"the healer within"
means all your potential, inclusive of body attributes (mouth voice and fingers etc.) and all mental attributes (knowledge, understanding, ability to learn)
(and you can beneficially use a yoga visualization if it does not add confusion to the metaphor - but this is walking a fine line between function and madness)

but trying to take these mental re-orientation metaphors, so as to turn them into consumer society paradigms and mathematical formulas is inappropriate.

the healer's 3-d gestalt type mentality is wider and less mundanely accurate than the accountant's columnar mentality - with the caveat being, that during surgery, the more visionary medical practitioner (a kind of real healer) definitely becomes a truly accurate list processor.

very few healers are also surgeons, but most surgeons are healers or once were.

Aside from the dollar thing I agree.  You can also feed, clothe or shelter someone out of guilt and your heart as closed as the portcullis gate.

I don't know about the karma part but this is nearly exactly what I believe:

That's why I created the thread about the greatest love of all.  If you don't love yourself, how can you possibly love others?

What about the monetary cost of that ? What about the threat of violence if you allow a stranger into your own home ? I'm not so sure you would be willing to do all those things, out of guilt. But then again, everyone is different, but I just can't see it.

The karma example I tried to use, was someone helping others, for the sake of positive karmic retribution for their actions. Not helping others, just to help. Kind of, an alterior (spl) motive if you will.

I love this thread. Been thinking about this idea a lot lately, i'm glad you posted.

Love is the greatest answer to so many questions we have. If the purpose of existence is nothing, and nothing "really" matters, then why would you ever be hesitant to express or give, your love.

On my way to RI - opening an organic cafe and caterer in a month and a half ! ! ! ! !

Can't wait to talk more about this ! !

Love always seems to have a healing element in it. IMO it's because it relaxes the body in a way we rarely achieve as animals anymore.
