It's a matter of personal preference. I keep mine taped until 85-90% colonization then remove the tape and turn the jars upside down.  Works.

Thanks dog, I was just reading the UK growers Diary, and buddy said when he took the tape off, the jars colonized quick. Would taking the tape off let contamants in? Also is it alright to loosen the jar lids a little?

If you use a top verm layer you should be all right.

Flipping the jars allow any exess moisture that acumulates in the bottom of the jar to drain to the top, feeding the colonized grain/etc and provides a better moisture ratio for the bottom of the jar to colonize.

Don't tape unless your paranoid. No real gain is achieved by this. most contams come when innoculating and preping substrate or improper sterilization of substrate. The tape is not neccessary. :ooo:

Ok I understand the importance of flipping the jar, BUT
if the tape is left on, is colonization slower?

What about when using grain? No tape then either?

Thanks guys, I think i'll leave the tape on until i see some growth, its only been 3 days since innoculation. I'm not to worried about it, just wondered if there was a big difference.
