PF Tek use Martha or Shotgun chamber?
    #10028458 -

So like a noob I tried to run before I could crawl and made a martha fruiting chamber to go with my first grow.
I initially was trying to fruit rye grain with a coir and verm casing...didnt work for me guess im not good enough yet.

So now I have some BRF cakes that are on day 2 of full colonization and think I am ready to fruit. But should I use my martha that can only maintain 80% RH or make a shotgun and cross my fingers?
Any suggestions would be appreciated...

Your martha is the one in your gallery? Use that, it looks awesome

Shotgun those cakes!

:minigun:

A martha, as you indicated, is not usually suitable for cakes and a shotgun FC is super easy and cheap to build.

I'd wait to birth those cakes until day 7 post colonization though - it always pays off in the end to wait that full week.

Cool so let them sit 5 more days in the jars...should I take them out of the incubator and expose them to indirect sunlight?

So the term "birthing" are the days that follow after 100% outer colonization is achieved,,, is that right?

You could take them out of the incubator and expose them to indirect sunlight if you want.  Many people allow their jars to colonize in indirect sunlight at room temperature so that would be fine.

"Birthing" is the process of taken a fully colonized cake out of its container (after the 7 days of course) and placing it into the fruiting chamber.  You can even do something known as the 'dunk and roll' and, after removing the cake from its container, dunk it in water for 24 hours and then roll it in vermiculite and place it into the fruiting chamber.  This makes sure that the cake has enough moisture to fruit properly and the vermiculite that sticks to the cake helps increase the RH in the microclimate at the cakes surface which will help induce pinning.

No need for indirect sunlight yet. Birthing is just the term for getting the cake out of the jar. As if the jar is the mommy and the cake is the baby.

There is no term for letting them sit for 7 days. It's just letting the mycelium consolidate its hold on the substrate

Thanks so far...I definitely plan on doing a dunk and roll, yet Im still on fence on whether I should use my martha chamber or build a quick shotgun chamber. Or does it even matter? Most people that use pf tek method ive seen go with a simple shotgun, but is ok to use the martha? Im really desprite on having a successful grow this time, Ive failed so many attempts on grows so far...

Maybe you should see how they do in your martha, and if they don't start pinning, make yourself a shotgun FC. Couldn't hurt to try, right?

I guess your right...

IF they dont grow in the martha...whats chalking up one more failure. If they do fail Im taking a baseball bat to the martha chamber and keeping it simple from here on out...
Whats the minimal humidity cubensis will thrive at? MY martha only holds at 80% humidity with the coolmist humidifier on 24/7, but will only reach 98% when the ultrasonic mist is on for the 30 minutes that its on for ever 3 hours...

i did cakes in a greenhouse and it turned out better than a shotgun.  I ran a vicks v400 24/7 and misted and fanned the cakes at least twice a day and yielded more then 6 dry grams per cake with multiple flushes so probably 10 g's per cake.

edit: Also, take into account that RR has even stated to me personally, that greenhouses are not suited for cakes. Maybe I just got lucky

Your vicks should have provided enough FAE to not have to fan them. But if you didnt have an ultrasonic mister I can see were you had to mist them...I guess

i fan them and just keep my eyes on them to make sure everything is optimal, sometimes id shut the humidifier off and let them dry out a bit then turn it back on also.  And trays of perlite helped humidity along.

Good idea..Im going to use the MARTHA FRUITING CHAMBER AND keep her extra humid with trays of wet perlite:thumbup:

Your using a vicks v400 24/7??? what size of greenhouse to you have??It must be massive.

I have only ever heard of people running them on timers. and for FAE??? slits in your greenhouse walls will take care of that.

Are you running your v400 outside and pumping in?? I know RR has his inside, runs something like 6 mins on 10 off.

Im not sure what the take is on cakes in a martha/greenhouse, i seem to remember someone saying they dont perform well when used with coolmists etc in greenhouses but IDK.

6 grams DRY is pretty good for cakes, i have seen more per flush, however its still largly depending on ginetics when your growing from multispore. Id like to see comparisons between cakes in a different fruiting chambers from an isolate, but i doubt it will happen.

Maybe you could be the first to expirement?? get some agar and work hard isolating a nice strain and grow it out different fruiting chambers. Like say a batch of 40 cakes, 20 in the martha and 20 in a shotgun, and do a few runs of 20 20 each and see what happens.

I thought of using both to see which would work better...I actually have some fresh agar dishes sitting in my fridge haha... But i need to get atleast one fruit first at least right lol

You dont need fruits for agar, you can put a drop of spore solution on agar and streak it across the surface to begin isolating

All my spores are in my jars colonizing... Could i open a colonized jar in a glove box and use an inoculating loop to scrape out a bit of mycelium?

I wouldnt, id let them finish colinsing before you attempt anyting like that.

A better option would be injecting sterile water down the side of your substrate, scraping the needle across the myc and succing back up the water, then birhting your cakes.
