how hot to sterilize millet
    #999212 - 10/28/02 04:36 AM (21 years, 5 months ago)

i microwaved some millet to see how much moisture would be lost from it for a little experiment i was trying. i left it in too long and it started to burn in the jar. it gave off choking smoke and smelt of burnt popcorn. anyway i am just wondering if anybody knows what heat will kill endospores for a short time. i have heard most materials dont burn black until they are at about 500C. would burnt millet have any nutritional value for shrooms?

I am not sure the actual temperature of sterilization, i know it's hotter than 212, and may be up to 250. It's certainly not higher than 250 though.

would you grow flowers on charred soil? i don't think so.

i remember in microbiology books they gave the organism and time limits at various temps both moist (pc) and dry (oven). some were killed in 5 mins at 200C in an oven while they took 60 mins at 15psi. i microwaved some millet yesterday until it just started to smoke. im waiting for my liquid innoc to come along and will inject and see what happens

As long as there is water in the millet it will not get hotter than 100 degrees C, pressure cooking is the only reliable way of sterilisation sorry.

exactly my point, when all the water is gone they heat up to the point of combustion. i have a jar that looks like toasted millet. there is a small black clump of millet in it. i will rehydrate them with liquid innoc measured precisely.

Cool, I like to see people experimenting. The problem with the microwave is that it produces hot spots. It would be much better to slow cook the millet on a cookie sheet in the over (on low) for a few hours. Weigh your millet before you bake it and then again after. The difference in weights is the weight of the water that was driven off. Divide and you get the percentage that was water.

yep ive already done it slowly. 100g dried down to about 85g. so it has about 15% water. other peoples may vary though. i microwaved 1 minute at a time shaking in between. it took about 8 mins before it started to burn
