Cakes directly on perlite?
    #996505 - 10/27/02 09:56 AM (21 years, 4 months ago)

Is it beneficial to put cakes directly on perlite? Are there any downsides (i.e. cakes become contaminated from contact with perlite)? thanks

Just a matter of personal choice. Directly on perlite, some folks say, feeds cake more water. On foil or dish whatever keeps perlite clean of verm or other matter encouraging contam.

Personally, I put 1/2 pint cakes onto those plastic canned-catfood saver lids from Petco or food store. I find it doesn't affect cake moisture adversely, and keeps my chamber more tidy.

I like my perlite to be fluffy white like fresh snow, without unsightly off-color areas. See also: Herman Melville's Moby Dick chapter, "The Whiteness of the Perlite."

Call me Fishmeal.

Putting your cakes directly on perlite will result in over saturated cakes and fat-ass water balloon mushrooms. If you like waiting a week for your shrooms to dry then go for it.
