air exchange info
    #9941169 -

I have a question regarding FAE with monotubs... I am wondering how do you know if your tubs are getting adequate air exchange? i have 6- 1.5" holes in each tub and i have three tubs.

i have a small oscilating fan about in the middle height of the tubs. i have the speed on low and i can see the outside of the polyfil move as the air moves at it. i just am not sure if the air is getting in and or out of the tubs. i do not have alot of polyfil in the holes. i am concerned due to seeing some pins come up but not many. so i think its either fae or to much mist, i mist maybe once a day or every other day but since pins are here i wont mist anymore.

Do i leave the fan on low or medium? and does the fan stay on 24/7 ? thanks

The way I judge if I'm getting adequate FAE for a mono, is if the substrate looks slightly dried out about 2-3 times a day.  In which case you're going to mist to replace that lost moisture.

You CAN neglect your monos without a fan in the room oscillating the air... but I found better performance when you supplement the mono with misting and fanning.  Just stay on top of it.  Just like anything, paying close attention and taking care of the substrate's needs are what will give you good performance.

thanks for the info... i think the mycelium has gone through some tuff times just does not look that healthy. there is alot of yellow in it and it looks like its been melted like melted plastic. guess next time thank god i have another set of tubs ready to go

That's a sign that your strain needs more fresh air.  I'd pull the polyfill out of at least a couple of those holes to let more air in, and just mist to make up for lost moisture.

RR, thank you very much... i was hoping the guru would see one of my many many mono tub postings sooner or later... RR, i would like to ask does the yellowing mean it is dying? I am also seeing a poor pinset. some pins (10 of them) a few of them are looking as if they are turning downwards from once going straight up. is this due to high concentration of co2 ?

Not to mention the mycelium on the surface looks like a plastic netting that was on fire and the remainder of this plastic netting looks melted, is this stopping the pinning?

RR, you said to pull polyfill out of a couple of those holes. Do you mean completly out or just a slight amount of polyfill in the hole compared to what i have in there now? I was afraid of pulling it conpletly out due to contams or am i safe now? thanks

Pull it out.  In the fruiting stage, the polyfill serves no purpose.  You don't want filtered air during fruiting, you want massive FRESH air, which can't pass through polyfill.  Fresh air is the number 1 pinning trigger, and it's also the number one defense against molds which only thrive in stale, still air.

I'm going to SLIGHTLY disagree, I know RR doesn't really do monos which is why I'm gonna add in some of my experience.  While the tub is on the spawn run I'll tape my holes.  And then once I introduce it to fruiting conditions I'll open up all the holes.  However sometimes without the polyfil it would become too difficult to maintain a high rh even with supplementing misting.  So, if that does become a problem put polyfil in a couple holes, or as many holes as it takes maintain rh.

Remember you're constantly fighting to maintain rh AND provide FAE, as doing both at the same time is the trick.  If you're able to maintain rh with misting... open up the holes without poly.  If it becomes a problem, use polyfil.  That is not to filter the air but to help maintain rh... that is the main use of polyfil in the fruiting stage.
