Good question!

Dunk them in a jar full of water. Put a lid on the jar.

Roll up a small piece of aluminium foil into a ball, and put that between the cake and the lid. That will keep the cake fully submerged.

They don't have to be completely submerged to absorb the water.

The way I weighted mine was to flip the old lids upside down and put a few nickels in them then set that on top of the cake inside a glad reusable container full of water.

It provides increased nitrogen.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.
