Who knows their chickens. Best for eggs and best to eat.

I am about to construct a chicken coop to raise some chickens at my home.  i want eggs and also a good chicken to name either monday, tuesday, wednesday, etc.... I imagine the best chickens for eggs will be different then the best chicken for dinner.  Anyone with some experience have some advice?  I can order 10 day old baby chicks for onlt $3.25 on this website, but there are lots of options. Any help?

Black australorps are best for eggs, you can expect 2/3 per day per chicken usually.

They were breeded (bred?) to be optimal egg layers, and theyre nice looking too.

I had 4 of em.

goodluck, you should keep in touch about your adventures keeping them.

Are you in an urban or rural setting?

I have some black australorps, barred rock, brown leghorns, the blacks do the best

pscyanescens... google 'chicken tractor' and let them free range,
the eggs are much better and they are much healthier

Thanks for the info. I am in a rural mountain area, up in the cascades of the sierra nevada mountains in California.  We get some snow from time to time so we need a good insulated coop preferably with a heat lamp inside so we can get year round eggs.

Also i plan to let them be free range but only under supervision, i hear they can get diseases by mingling with wild birds.

And yes i want to name them a day of the week, this way there is less attachment when we its time for a chicken dinner, we just kill wednesday on wednesday and we eat chicken wednesday! Instead of killing sherly or mable or pecker or scratch scratch etc.... I want my chickens to die for a reason.... and that is to feed me, my family and friends, not to be mourned.

My friend's dad used to raise chickens.... it's probably cruel and unusual, but he would kick the chickens (not hard) to make them more tender.

You can give a chicken a happy life and kill it  for food humanely where the chicken didn't even see it coming, but if you kick it, you are just pissing off your chicken

OP - if you only have "occassional snow" it may not be necessary for you to have an insulated coop with a heat lamp.

When i had mine for the winter, it was -30C ... and all they had was a coop that was basically a dog house. + they chose to sleep open in a corner behind a TV under the porch, where they laid their eggs.

When it was really cold we saw a drop in their egg production, but not major.

With 4 - a house of 5 people would harvest 30+ eggs every 2 weeks, we could hardly give them all away.

good for the compost! I don't mind extra eggs. Also i think eggs are good for my dog aren't they?  Also I am after the chicken shit for fertilizer as well. Just add chicken shit to a barrel mix with water, mix occasionally and use it on your plants.  Excellent organic source of nitrogen, and its hard to burn your plants with organics. 

I hear at low temps they lay less eggs and a lamp is optimal if you want eggs year round.  The snow here never really sits for more then 3-4 days so it isn't that bad. I probably won't insulate but I hear the lamp is also good to keep their water from freezing.

And yes kicking your chicken sounds crewel. I want my chickens to have a good life and to die happy.
