that sounds nice, but when i started all this i really wanted to try to keep it simple since i dont have a whole lot of spare time. ill read into it though, no doubt. and i live in an apartment with no garage and would rather not have the house smell of cow shit

composted manure has very little smell, but personally I use coco-coir out of ease of use. I can order a case (24) of bricks at time and the compact, easy to store bricks each make three gallons of substrate.

On a smaller scale, you can pick up the same bricks at pet stores for 3-4 USD each. Same volume though...

But yea, you can fruit grains directly but generally considered the "spawn" meant to further inoculate a substrate...and this is done because direct inoculations of substrates with liquid cultures and other means are generally too slow to prevent contaminates from winning dominance over the batch...

Yeah, old ass horse poo only smells like earth. No-one smells my double -tub setup at all, even if I let them see it.

bah, wifey distracted me mid-thought...

about the not being able to inoculate bulk substrates directly, yea, that's why we inoculate sterilized jars of grains. To create an ideal, contaminate free environment for the mycelium to get a huge head-start on any possible contaminates in colonizing larger substrates.

i know this thread is getting old. but while its still alive i might as well. I was originally fallowing this thread,(http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/4576865/an/0/page/1) with a few variations here and there. He get pretty nice size yeilds. i got nothing like that. i guess they are pretty short.

This guy got really nice yeilds using jiffy mix - http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/563486#563486
is it the substrate depth being too shallow and the casing layer being too thick thats killing me?

also user Blue Helix has a tek on sterilizing bags of very rich substrate and inoculating them with 140cc of LC.  Colonization in a week. Skips the spawn run of 10-14 days.

The bottom line in this horrible 2 year old bumped thread is that jiffy mix is NOT a substrate, nor is a microwave suitable for pasteurization.  Cubes are dung and straw lovers, not potting soil for houseplant lovers.
