Can you nuke out all the nutrients in the substrate?
    #7240950 -

nuked the jiffy mix substrate to pasturize it. getting very small (1" tall)fruits. Temp - mid 70's. Dont tell me thats too low cause thats what RR says. RH - started at 87-90%, but then plugged a few of the holes and how it stays 92-95%. Im trying to find a reason they are so tiny. strain is texas.

There are tons of reasons why you might have small fruits. Some more information might help.

I was under the impression that the Jiffy mix was a good casing layer, but shouldn't be used as a substrate.

Jiffy mix as substrate?

Jiffy Mix is a non-nutritious casing (humidity blanket / contam barrier) but because of it's non-nutritious nature, does not make a good substrate at all. What was below the Jiffy Mix?

Additionally, beyond the hundreds of other possible reasons for a poor flush you should also remember that mushrooms will only be about 1.5-2.0x the size of the _colonized_ substrate. If the total depth of the substrate was a couple inches, your mushies will be roughly the same.

You're really going to need to flush out the details before any answer makes sense...

lol, im really sorry. i meant casing layer is jiffy mix. not substrate. i used rye berries prepared with RR's tek. and cased with jiffy mix. I have seen pictures of awesome jiffy mix flushes so i assumed it would be just fine. spread the substrate out in the pans which was about an inch thick. covered with about an inch of casing mix. is the substrate layer too thin?

You can't nuke the nutrients out of anything.

The nutrients, if overcooked, would resemble ash or coal. You can't really do that in a microwave.

You should have your casing in a 1:4 (casing:substrate) Ratio. From what I'm reading you didn't really prepare/ plan your casings that much, which is going to result in lesser yields.

so a 4" substrate layer and 1" casing layer is the ideal setup?

I think on this one it is a matter of the multispore crap shot and just overall bad genetics cause all my Texas come out great, not always tall but rather short and DENSE and weigh a ton even after drying them

The same thing happened to me once with Treasure coast...sure there were a million of them but every damn one of them was like pencil thin at best after they dried:thumbdown: If at 1st you don't succeed grow, grow again:yesnod:

You might want to try a bulk substrate with those rye berries. Horse poo will make them BIG. I have had 88g (wet) boomers come out od 4" of substrate that way.

How do you explain these then

That's on 2.5 inch substrate depth . lol:grin:

I use between a 1/2" - 3/4" casing layer . I never use more than 3/4" , regardless of substrate depth . This depth will provide more than enough for a few good flushes . You keep misting it anyhow , it doesn't dry out .

getsome: you basically tried to fruit the berries directly without giving them a substrate to colonize. Even pf tek's have a substrate built into them with the brf+verm mixture. That can definitely be a huge part of the equation.

Photoshop? Aliens?
Let me ask this- how is potency on a monster mushroom? Not like it matters when they are so big...

I thought I read that you colonized rye berries (your spawn) and added jiffy mix (casing) without an actual substrate (compost, manure, coir, etc.) for the (spawn) to recolonize before the casing layer was applied directly to the spawn.

I'm sorry if I missed something...

Yeah that was the conversation. No bulk for the substrate. Without that all you got is colonized grain for sub.

There is also the substrate thickness conversation. Obviously your fruits can be many times larger than your substrate.

And Monster shrooms are great when you have enough food for em. I've had the potency discussion on here and experimented with it much. The biguns on the first few flushes kick *ss. Later when your food is gone and moister is low the potency does drop. As per my quality control shows me. hehe. So you give up and make new ones or try to add more food. I am preachin to the choir though now..

hmm, maybe i am the one that is missing something. I colonized the jars of rye, then spread it out on a pan and covered with jiffy mix and let colonize that. What are you suggesting i do? tell me more!

Re: Can you nuke out all the nutrients in the substrate? [Re: getsome]

The general idea is that if you take your colonized rye, you can use it to spawn something like pasteurized horse poo. Let that colonize till you have a nice thick substrate, then case that. The rye berries work way better as spawn then a substrate.

Read a little bit about bulk substrates. They give your myc the food for a good pinset, longevity, and heartiness.
