I remember after 9/11, people were saying "they hate us because we're free!"

....and I was thinking "they hate you because your aggressive government won't mind it's own business, and fucks up other countries."

The French have given us great things made with wine, butter and cream.  From the US we got McDonalds.

You decide.

And the French are dead sexy (not minding all the weird looking Euro's).

My dream is to be legally married in Nice or something to that effect.

I frequently ask people from other countries the general consensus of Americans where they're from.  From what I understand the stereotype falls under two extremes, fat ignorant consumer whores (America Fuck Ya types), and smart folks who mean well with an over-zealous government they don't agree with.  Not too far from the truth.

i've met a few americans and they've all been cool. they seem a bit tense at first though, but it's understandable if you're in a new country and don't know the local customs. americans have been respectful, willing to study and are more open. i think they are pretty aware of the stereotypes that go around the world about them and they constantly like to break them down and are able to laugh about it, which is cool

I'm what you will call a Chicano and from the Mexican point of view they envy the advantages we get as a society and look down at those (like myself) who make nothing of it.

I know too many Americans to apply the general stereotypes (my sister is married to a San Francisconian). It really depends and I wouldn't generalize. I've met a lot of simple minded but sweet people, but I also know many intellectuals. My sister's husband has a degree from Berkeley and is a teacher in an international school here in Germany. He's also a singer in two bands. Really cool guy actually.
Well, the fact that I was in Eugene, Oregon when I lived in the US for a year might have helped in meeting an disproportional amount of intellectuals, too. Not many hillbillies there, really.

It doesn't matter what race, religion, sexual orientation, or where your from. All stereotypes have a silver lining of truth. I'm from Atlanta GA. Not only do we get a lot of shit from the world for being American but we catch a lot of flak from northerners. I'm an educated white/native american male who has traveled half the globe . I was married to a french girl for 3 years and now engaged to a Canadian and most of my friends are yankees. Yet I have 2 cousins that are toothless rednecks that live in trailers. They both are meth addicts that have been incarcerated numerous times and have many children running around they don't pay a dime for. So yes while many stereotypes are often true there are many that break the mold like me and should be judged on a person by person basis.

I've only ever been to Florida so I can't judge. I'd like to explore a little more of America when I can.

The one thing that sticks out to me is FAKE and like to play dumb.

I hear that a lot from my British friends, even the ones who have been to America. Particularly, they say that everyone fakes being nice all the time, like retail clerks saying "Have a nice day!" Being from the States, I know that's not true. A lot of the time people really ARE nice, and really DO wish you have a nice day. I find British strangers to be really rude and cold, and it just makes me sad. No one ever waves to passers-by here, or start up a friendly conversation... unless it's a drunk, older man in the afternoon -- they'll walk with you wherever you're going and talk your ear off.

As for the faking being dumb thing, yeah that's annoying.

Its a stereotype portrayed by TV.  Whats even sader is the Brits that follow it as if its something to aspire too.

I can remember when US TV started taking over UK TV.  We didn't have hardly any american shows here at one point then suddenly there were thousands.  At the same time all our teenage girls dyed their hair blonde, ask their parents for boob jobs and walked around acting stupid and saying "whatever", "totally", "OMG", "talk to the hand" and other highly annoying US phrases.
