What It Is To Be American?

discuss.

IMO, to be american is to take things for granted, as well as other things.

to be american can be a lot of things.

It's to be fat, lazy, ignorant, uneducated, prejudice, racist, belligerant and power-hungry. CONSUME CONSUME CONSUME without regard for anyone but yourself.

And some other things
At one extreme end of the negative spectrum, anyway.

To be American is to be labeled. Given the idealistic freedoms that the US political machine tends to project, in no small part based upon the founding sentiments from the period in which we declared our independence from Britain (though indeed it seems many of these ideals have fallen by the wayside over time), to be American is to be free. Free to choose, free to act, and free to be, in so far as your own freedoms do not infringe upon the freedoms of another.

It is unfortunate that this is neither an unconditional nor universal statement, and indeed short of maintaining your own self-sustaining farm plot out in the forests of uncharted or relatively unknown territoy, I find that as an American I am not allotted many of the personal freedoms that I believe should be inalienable rights. Nevertheless, so long as I understand the methods of government and can playcate their many rules and regulations, I am in large part free to do as I please. So perhaps it is not that my being American equates to my freedom, but my being an intelligent and informed American just might!

To clarify, being American is by no means a requisite for freedom, and in fact many Americans do not find themselves so lucky. Myself however, I have travelled to over twenty countries and would undoubtedly place the United States of America towards the top of the list in terms of the relative degrees of personal freedom that can be attained.

Thanks for putting my scrambled thoughts into words man. That was very well put.

Being an American to me, even tho I'm European and never even been to us, is :

* eat food that my body doesn't want so i can get fat, its freedom in eating anything you want, fat shall set you free
* listen to gangster rap and drink nasty tasting malt liquor and show finger signs that indicates some criminal activity
* being afraid of terrorists and make sure that everyone else around me is just as afraid as I am.
* ride horses and throw ropes to collect cows and later at night eat beans and bacon around the campfire in some dessert with a huge orange sun in the background
* always look around you when you have been to the toy store and bought a water gun for the kid, on the way home some cop might spot the water gun inside my car and shoot me in the head with no warnings
* Living in a camp trailer with a redhead or a blond and 11 children, no job but always meet up on KKK meetings every Wednesday
* Having a beer belly, dirty biker clothes and a Harley Davidson and drive around from bar to bar and get in fights while listening to born to be wild on the ipod
* Being completely misplaced in some Arabian country with a gun and a uniform all in the name of freedom shooting the native habitat and then upload the videos of missile impacts to youtube so other can be entertained as well.
* getting several hundred thousands of dollars in fine for downloaded mp3s on soul seek
* being in prison for the rest of your life because you stole a pizza, you just happened to be caught three times
* owning a gun in case the government gets corrupt and wants to invade your house, and as long as you understand that guns doesn't kill people its perfectly safe to own as many guns you want.
* Being able to say "Schwarzenegger is my governor"

being american means your a citizen of the US...

some truely positive american aspects:
-knowing that upwards social and economic mobility is possibe if you want it bad enough
-being open to the cultures that immigrants bring with them as they come to the us and picking out the aspects of those cultures we like (food or clothing styles)
-being compasisonate to many people we never have even met or will even meet (look at the amount of private money and other valuables for katrina, tsunami, 9/11, not to mind the other billion things we probably donate to every year)

some aspects of being american that are more like a double edged sword:
-normally taking a fair amount of pride in our work and our beliefs(if your beliefs are wrong...)
-being competitive and wanting to win always (alas you cant win all the time, and not all things can ever be won)
-our quick and rapidly changing culture can be good since new ideas are always comming and appearing. can be bad since this decreases people attention span to many issues in society. and things that are constant for too long people tend to say something like "why are we still talking about that? that was soooo last week"

You're conflating "American" with "Fucking Douchetwat Consumerist Idiophile".

America has one of the most, if not THE most, diverse populations in the world. If you try to stereotype Americans, you're just taking the piss out of yourself--because you're being retarded.

If you want to talk about WASPs, make that clear. Because this sounds like the "Americans" you're trying to describe. Fuck all the other people in this country.

Stop being simple. That's how genocide happens: Simplistic categorization and caricatures breed dehumanization and disrespect for "The Other".

Fucking gay line of thinking.

Do it better. Stop being rejectionist and carte blanche just to be "hip" with fucking asshat street punks.
