    #9824626 -

I gotta go to work

What makes ya'll take a piece of
Art Seriously?
What makes ya'll take an ARTIST seriously?

Can you take the Art but not the artist
seriously? Vice Versa?

I have almost hammer time names!

This is a very interesting question. i think for the most part art isn't SERIOUS. at least it isn't created in a serious manner, there's a lot of playfulness involved. my friend read me a quote yesterday that said "To be a true artist is to surrender yourself to temporary lunacy". Discipline in applying yourself is different than having a serious approach. if you can discipline yourself to have fun, then i guess you're a 'serious' artist.

I don't think there is any systematic way to go about it. Someone can take a brick wall and the arrangement of bricks just as seriously as a Monet or Magrite. I think what usually makes me respect an artist is the evidence of them getting lost and having fun in the simple act of what they do.

And i think it's completely possible to respect the art and not that artist. i think namely of a photographer named william eggleston, one of the pioneers of color photography. i think undoubtably he is an outstanding inspirtation to most photographers. yet when you watch him in interviews he's an asshole and doesn't ever really give straight responses, his life is a mess, he's an alcoholic. my teacher had him come into his class when he was in grad school to do a lecture and he showed up wasted with a trunk full of black and white photo's put them in the middle of the room and said, feel free to ask any questions. passed out for an hour or so got up and left. I can respect his work, but for an artist who i respect his work ethic and the mind work involved? the intellectualization of his own work? not so much. He's kind of just a joke.

I dunno you go back and forth with it, cause who's to say how an artist is supposed to be, and work. maybe it should be as simple as, i like the work, i don't like the work. It's like you become famous and people jsut expect all this shit from you. when you're just trying to do stuff you like to do. but william eggleston maybe didn't care about getting noticed. wasn't interested in winning over the worlds attention and love and respect. He just wanted to get drunk and take pictures and have fun, and everyone else just started putting all these meanings to his stuff. I mean shit maybe i respect him for not just going along and pretending to be someone he's not. for doing stuff he actually liked to do despite what anyone had to say about it. the art was about him. if you love it great, if you don't fine, just get outa my face about it.

In the same regard i can respect an artist for their work ethic, for their devotion for their relentless attempts at creating art. But the art itself you don't really like.

Even musicians. think about how many musicians you love who were really assholes in life.

you don't make art to gain respect as a person or an artist. you make art cause it's waht you do, it holds your attention in a way you can't understand. It's therapeutic. it's suspension of time in a boundless field of imagination and the actualizing of your imagination in a tangible physical way.

I think when i meet an artist and i am excited about them it's usually because they have a really... inquisitive nature and a constant sense of wonder even with the mundane. Humbleness. But that's kinda of what i respect in people in general, it's not specific to artists. I guess i would say i particularly respect and like artists who are really excited about what they do and aren't just shitting and vomitting out work, and can see beyond the self perception of their own work. Artists who truely apply themselves. I particularly am fascinated when artists don't stick to one medium, who like to explore in the name of creativity.

Art is def taken serious to me when it you can tell someone has put their soul into it.

When I see a series of symmetrical dots, I get very bored with it very quick.

What makes me take an artist seriously is if s/he takes his/her art seriously.

There are many different reasons to like a piece of art, but to truly appreciate, see and draw/paint it for what it is takes a certain mindset. It all becomes clear when you walk through an art gallery or museum, some pieces just call to you stopping you in your tracks for a short time losing you in the imagery that said artist was trying to create.

The reverse is also true, I've seen many pieces that just didn't flow, you stand there wondering what exactly the artist was trying to convey and in doing so lose the purpose and message that i believe most artists try to create. (Not that i think all art MUST have a purpose, there are plenty of artists that just do it for fun or just to make an easy buck, but their artwork usually reflects their passion for the piece, which matters alot to me.)

Other times you think you know what the artist is trying to portray and then it turns out that they weren't trying to portray anything, they just wanted to make a beautiful picture.

There are also many different kinds of art; drawings, paintings, sculptures and music are just a few.

So yeah, I can take the art seriously even if i don't take the artist seriously. But to take the artist seriously and not the art is alot rarer. Though art is an extremely subjective subject:vaped: so the argument could be made either way.

That's my 2 n' 3/4 cents.

How do you know when someone has put their heart and soul into something?

and just cause your bored with it doesn't mean someone didn't put their heart and soul into it. Doesn't mean there's no thought behind it.

and just cause you're bored by something doesn't mean that the artists isn't worth respect.

I think i respect just about anyone who has the drive and motivation discipline and desire to express themselves artistically and creatively. Whether i think that person is smart. or if their art work was successful. whether i like the work is completely secondary to me. I mean that's all just a matter of taste. Some artists are really good at making works of art that with ease and fluidity communicate their intent. some artists don't, some artists make work that makes you have to spend time with the work and really examine before they hand you the answer on a silver platter, who's to say one's better than the other?
who's to say one deserves more respect? They are both putting something out there. they have ideas brewing.

art is nuts.

I Agree.  My reply was the only way I could describe the indescribable for me.

Being as everyone sees the world through a different camera lens, there is no possible way to argue art.

You can very visibly tell when some one has put their heart and soul into it. Its nothing that can be analyzed, but you can just tell.

As far as people taking a piece of artwork seriously, a lot of it has to do with presentation. A lot of abstract work I never would have appreciated if it wasn't presented to me how it was.

If no one else takes the art seriously and it isn't presented well, it sends off a vibe to people that says 'this isn't that important'.

Time is the biggest indicator... You can really tell how much some one cared about a piece by how much time they put into it
