Weiliis Galore.... and NOT in ATLANTA!
    #980261 - 10/21/02 05:51 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

So i decided to celebrate a new week by looking for some weiliis in my town... NOT in atlanta... about an hour away.

heres what i found... in a 10 sq/ft area...

It rained well today and last night, so i am going back to the same place tomorrow to see what happens

this is the biggest i could spot... i found a few new ones and several older ones that were falling apart, and beginning to go back from which they sprang.

All were found in a neighborhood about 2 minutes from my apartment.

people around here were very helpful, allowing me to look thru their yards for my "mycology class".  One lady even told me how she (a nurse working in a med center) had to treat some teens who were "hopped up" on mushroom tea.  She helped me find some nice amanitas for my "class".  One gentlemen told me to come back tomorrow and look thru his yard (he had some beautiful amanitas growing in there, as well as spots where weiliis had clustered and disintegrated)

So, the moral is, Atlanta isnt the only spot for the wheelies!

My question is now, how would one clean mushrooms for consumption?  Also, on some of the more degraded mushies, there is a white substance that is growing on the stems..like a dead tree gets after it has gotten soggy and old in the woods.... what is this... how can i clean this off, if at all possible?

 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jfi

PS.. i love the shroomery...!

nice finds man, thats so cool

Yeah I like the idea of telling people you are in a mycology class...its the best excuse !

I think its not good to wash with water, just dust off as much as possible. The white stuff might just be mycelium, and I have noticed this on some pictures of Weilli's...I think its just normal.

Great pictures as well

Yeah, I find all my weilii's about 45min-an hour north of Atlanta. It's just the closest big city, so people say they find them there

As far as cleaning them, dust them off then dry them out... they'll be a little gritty but it's worth it.

angry,

thanks man! Im so elated!

I looked at those mushies again and that white stuff is definitely not mycellia. It wipes away almost like wet powder. It looks just like the white fungus or whatever that covers areas of dead trees and plant matter... .anyone know about this shit?

you can see it on my shrooms in my pics.

thx

Gumby,

Was it you that i asked about the college town possibly supporting these.. .you know. ... the college town about an hour east of atl?

i think you had unconfirmed reports of weiliis there.... well my picts are your confirmation!

whatcha think about the white stuff on the stems?

Yep, that was me... Thanks for the confirmation- these things are everywhere. And I'd have to agree with angryshroom on the white stuff being mycelium. Weiliis tend to have mycelium that goes up about 1/4 of the stem.

Yeah, they can be found a ways from ATL, I've only found them about an hour and a half outside of atl, but know that they grow further out than that. And oh hell yeah they grow in Athens, the biggest patch I've ever seen was in athens, they are definitely in college town!

Nice score and nice pics! About the white stuff on the stems, its mycelium as long as you picked them fresh, if you leave them out while still fresh for a few days then they tend to grow a white mold on cap and stem, as most mushrooms do, this is definitely something you wouldn't want to consume. As long as the white stuff was on the stem when you found it its natural, just mycelium.

I wouldn't try, not worth it in my opinion. But then again I have many a many a weilii to be picky about. Its up to you, I can't say I know what happens when you ingest this mold or how it reacts with the trip, its your call, I'd say don't eat them. If you do decide to eat them, make a tea so as to try and kill and destroy any possible toxins that may be present in the mold.

putting them in boiling water is the worst thing you can do.. the heat will kill all the psilocybin, then you won't even feel the slightest buzz when you eat them. i'd say just scrape all the white shit off real good.. then whipe the rest of the mushrooms down with a wet cloth.. then after whiping it clean dry them out 100% in a dessident chamber..

with those measures you should be safe.

I can safely disagree with you. The point of me boiling them first was to make mushroom tea. And believe, you, me.... there was PLENTY of psilocybin in those shrooms when i drank that tea!

Only 3 shrooms, and 6 hours of tripping balls.

No shit, everyone thinks putting mushrooms in boiling water breaks down all the psilocybin or something. Try it once, you'll be suprised. I have never noticed a degrade in potency, I'm sure some psilocybin is destroyed, but not enough to make a difference. I learned this from a friend(shroom wizard) who told me to boil the piss out of my cubes to make tea, and not to worry about potency loss, I gave it a try and its worked everytime with no problems. All my friends prefer a tea, and this is how I make it for them, no one has ever complained of the potency, except for it being too strong  I like to boil my mushrooms until a foam appears at the surface of the water, I'm not sure what the foam is, but I've been told (also by shroom wizard) that they are done boiling when you see the foam.

How could you say its the worst possible thing to do?? Even if it did significantly reduce potency, its better than eating a mold that could possibly make you sick. I'd rather be healthy and not tripping, than tripping and puking my guts out from ingesting some unknown mold.

And about them being in SC, I would put money on it. They are quite abundant in athens, and your right, SC is just up the road a bit, they have to be in SC! I am going to do some serious searching in SC and alabama next season to try and map the range of these wonderful weilii. Only reason I doubt alabama has them is because I haven't heard of any weilii being found west of ATL, its seems they grow from atl eastward. Never know until you look though.

I wonder if boiling boils out some of the other contributing constituents of the mushroom though, ie the tryptophan?
