If you feel you're driven by logic, try rationalizing. What's the worst thing that could happen in a social situation? Most of the time it's trivial.
Try imagining that worst case scenario: you have to answer your Professor in front of the class, and you freeze up. Maybe a few people giggle; someone whispers in the back -- nothing serious, nothing overtly humiliating. That's pretty realistic, I think.
I like to imagine what kind of insecurities are driving those giggles and whispers. Some people get off on making other people feel bad. So they might laugh, but I can only pity them.
The kinds of people who take advantage of social awkwardness are not the ones who I want to associate with. So I feel better walking into a situation like that, because I know that the cool people will still be cool with me, and the uncool people will make themselves known.
