An experiment, just curious, what would happen?!?!

What would happen if u made BRF cakes, only instead of using brown rice flour, u replaced w. light powdered malt extract??!! I was thinking how u inject spores into solutions made from this, and they germinate well. So why wouldn't they germinate on a cake made w. this. Only thing is I don't know if this stuff would be nutritious like flours, so mushies might not grow. Any ideas!?!?!?

I'll take a stab at it, but I am sure it most likely would not work...

Few reasons being:

1) Its going to have a high contamination rate.
2) It solidifies with water

I don't know any other of the reasons why it wouldnt work, nor the reasons why it would, but, Im thinking you're a lot better off sticking with the agar in agar dishes by itself rather with vermeculite in threre.

It just wouldnt be the same :smile:

i would presume there would be too much sugar for them to start growing. i.e. more than the recommended 4%

I have a friend who doesn't really exist that has been playing around with different substrate formulas and while he has never used light malt powder as the only nutrient (too damn sticky) he has been known to add a small amount (2-3Tsp) malt powder, for roughly 8 jars, to the mix with results as described below:
Colonization time reduced only slightly (1-2 days and not on every jar containing malt, 3/4) compared to control jars. Mycelium appearing more ryzomorphic than control jars. Fruiting pattern, number of flushes, size of fruit bodies, and total harvest indistinguishable from control.

if malt extract solidifies with water, and it contains nutrients, why not do something like this?

Take any ole PF recipe, add some malt extract in this way:
Mix vermiculite and water until appropriate moisture content reached
Mix damp vermiculite and malt extract to coat the vermiculite
Mix in dry BRF which would stick in the wet malt extract

Extra nutrients? A way to keep the nutrients as close to the water source as possible? I don't know, I'm just speculating! I'll try it though ^_^
