other desiccants???

ok i spent like 2 hrs today going around looking in all kinds of garden shops, hardwere shops, ect. looking for drierite or damprid and i couldnt find either. my plan was to dry my mushies just like they say in the faq, fan for 24-48hrs and then use drierite or damprid but i couldnt find either so if you guys could post some other types of desiccants and where i might be able to find it id really appriciate it.

i heard you can use epsom salt which is usually available at grocery stores and drug stores but i dont know if thats true or not.

Epson Salts will work fine :laugh:. Most grocery & drug stores have it. Around $3 for about 2.5 pounds. Bake it for a while to remove any moisture in it. It will solidify. Bust it up with hammer. After use, just bake again, bust back up & reuse.

Go to wal-mart and get ice melter. It's somewhare in the auto section by sealents and stuff. I think it's called driveway heat or something. It's the same thing just used for a different purpose. Dry-rite is used for melting ice too, should you need to. Just make sure it's calcium cloride your getting. Home depot and lowes always have had dry-rite.

Also you can get pure silical gel from almost everywhere, supermarkets, wal-mart, pet stores. It's a cat litter additive, it's 100% pure silical gel crystals. I just bought 64 oz. of it for $7, it's a lot, but they don't come in any smaller sizes except online at petco.com, it's 1.99 for a 4oz bag, +4.99 shipping, but I pretty much got 16x more for the same amount of money by not getting it online.

Most gun stores have a drying agent as well... they put them in the gun cases to keep the weapons from rusting.

I like damp-rid the best. It dried quick and you can get it at any Lowes. It is normally used to absorb the moisture out of the air to prevent mold and mildew from developing on stuff in your attic, but it does an equal job on fresh mushrooms.

Obtain a one quart mason jar. Aquire pure canning salt or just regular salt.
wrap a bunch of salt in a paper towel and stuff that in the bottom of the jar. Wrap the mushies in another paper towel. Wrap even more salt in a paper towel again and put that on top of the mushies. Stuff a couple more paper towels on top to squeze the air out. Seal the jar and leave it for a while. You can as 6T said bake the dessicant to remove any water. You'll need to repeat the process every couple days with dry salt. When you change the salt. you'll notice the salt is damp. I would also note to fan dry beforehand.

yea  silica gels works for me. If ya can get the one that has a blue indicator, that  way u can tell if the beads  have absorbed  too much moisture then u can put back in the oven for like 15-20 mins and re-use again.!  Available at pet stores, they will 99.9% have them
