Damprid query.

Hello hello.
Just went down to the hardware store and picked up some Dampsorb calcium chloride.
It is in little crystal form, not liquid.
They had packs with containers included but it was like $20 for a little tray with a few holes in it.
I was thinking mabye I could lay out a chux (dishwashing towel, very thin)over the crystals with a space at the bottom so the moisture could still seep through.
Do you guys think this would work?

Lowe's has it cheaper by far. I dry for 2 days in s nesco dehydrator, heat source disconnected then for a day with damp rid..Get a bowl+matching lid, air tight..Pour the damp rid in the bowl, place enough screen wire on top so fruits DO NOT TOUCH the rid...Cover an wait 3or4 days until they are cracker dry..That rid is nasty stuff, watch yourself..

Sorry I think i said it wrong.
Take a look at this:

Because I cant wet a towel and just place it on chicken wire or w/e I have to do something in alternate to replace the bottom screen.
I thought mabye a dishwashing towel which is very thin might been a good replacement so the crystals dont fall to the bottom.

Why would you need to keep the crystals away from the bottom of the bowl, and why on earth would you be putting more moisture in your curing chamber than the mushrooms already have? This might be inexperience talking, but...just freakin pour the crystals in a bowl...put a screen (or whatever sepperating apparatus you decide to use) over the crystals...lay in your mushies...and cover it for a couple days.

Nah you have to have a chamber down the bottom for excess water buildup.

Agreed. That's why the DampRid containers have three parts; the desiccant, a basket to hold it with holes in it and a solid conainer holding the basket.

how about you save yourself lots and lots of headaches:
buy a nesco food dehydrator.

There shouldn't be any. If you do have any your desiccant is spent or soon will be. You'll get no drying effect if there is standing water in your container.
Just put down desiccant and any sort of separator then the mushies.

actually, fastfred, there are dessicants that actually wick water away from one area and place it in another with the help of gravity... Dri-Z-Air trunk dessicators are an example. I know, it's wierd and sort of unbelievable, but i have one in my trunk right now (washington, hole in trunk, bad water!) and you just take the reservoir off and dump it out every few days... it's strange...
This link explains a little of how it works, nothing scientific, and i know that's what you like, but it shows that with some dessicants, it will draw in moisture, and deposit it elsewhere.

I use a similar setup. a small bowl with a piece of screen over it, the silica spread onto the screen, then set into a larger bowl with a screen on it, where the mushrooms are, and the whole setup is put in a cardboard box. works pretty good after fan-drying, and there's usually a little puddle of water in the smaller bowl afterwards.

Interesting... I have no idea how that would work, or what principle it would operate by.
But most desiccants simply absorb moisture from the air until they are spent, then you need to heat them to remove the moisture and regenerate them.
How would a desiccant continue to absorb moisture from the air if there is standing water? The desiccant would just start absorbing moisture given off by the standing water and it would not be absorbing moisture from your fruits efficiently any more.
Any idea what's in that desiccant?

No clue what's in it, but I think the whole reservoir thing actually helps it last longer without recharging/refilling. I know that despite the reservoir, it keeps my trunk nice and dry. it could just be that the bottom of the cage that has the desiccant in it is solid, the top is mesh, and the bottom just has a few small holes in it, so perhaps it's shielded enough from the reservoir that it can focus on removing moisture in the air instead... I have no clue how it works though.

It may have soemthing to do with the container design. I wouldn't trust that it would work the same way with just two layers of screen.

P.S. you can make some kick ass jerky, and fruit chips, and rollups.
Yes true but I'm sure a food dehydrater would cost more than $6.00 at a hardware store.
And the desiccant is just calcium chloride in liquid/crystal form.
