hello troops, sorry for my noobyness but ive been reading as mutch as i can and still cant find mutch info about this. so im a noob (exept for growing cubes from ready made kits)and i am about to recieve in the mail a spore print of psilocybe cyanescens, ive been reading about and collecting everything i need to start growing cubes, ive got plastic containers, jars, perlite, vermeculite, brown rice, thermomiter, humidity guage, cleaning materials, and pressure cooker. now i find out im getting cyanescens(the wood loving kind)and to be honest,i dont know the first thing about growing them.
so if anyone has experience with growing this strain i wouldnt mind some help,i want to make this work so i will be gathering as mutch info as i can about them in the next week or two. cheers.

You can create spawn using the cake method with items you have. If you go to Mushhroomvideos.com a couple of the videos there go into detail on the prep of woodchip substrates. watch the brf teks to learn how to make a glovebox and your spawn.

I thought only Panalonius cyans needed wood and different spawns, i didnt think psilocybe needed anything different than normal cakes. Prob wrong but i didn't think you needed anything different.

well my fortunes have changed since i started this thread but I'm still looking for info on the psilocybe cyanescens (the wood loving variety) if anyone has any info,or even better if anyone has grown them. i know they are quite popular in the pnw but i think most folk their tend to grow them outside in the garden. reading over past threads on this site it appears that this subject seems to pop up every now and then but never seems to come to anything so I'm hoping since the last time someone here will have new info regarding this strain. althow Ive never tried them Ive read that they are way stronger than cubensis and my native semilanceata so thats one of the reasons I'm interested in this strain, and also Ive heard that they are being spotted here in the UK more and more each season,so if possible i would like to start of a patch in some local woodland, like i say if possible as I'm a noob to shroom growing and don't really know the ropes yet. but first things first,if i can begin to understand how to grow them indoors first i will have plenty spores for this coming season in August.

Psy. Cyn. needs wood to fruit. I have a few syringes of it and I plan on doing it in the near future. It needs wood for sure to fruit. I have read countless forum posts and books on just this strain. Obviously its small portions of a book, but I'm just saying I have been, and still am doing research on this strain. I hear you can start with agar, to grain, then when you fruit you have to use a wood based substrate. And the temp has to be low for fruiting. Damn near close to freezing. I don't have the info on hand, just posting from memory.

I hate to tell you, but your mycological knowledge lacks a bit. Pans won't grow on wood. What you call "PANS" or "Panalonius" (sic) is actually the genus Panaeolus, as opposed to the genus Psilocybe. All Panaeolus mushrooms are coprophilic, meaning "dung loving". "Pans" in most cases is used for active Panaeolus (Copelandia) varieties, whereas Psilocybe cyanescens is referred to as "cyans".

Your success seems to be closely related with the climate of your area. If you say people have reported finding them wild close to you then I would recommend fruiting them outdoors. Supposedly it is possible to fruit them in areas they don't normally occur by: - using spawn to create a bed in the spring - harvesting in the fall - collect spawn (mycelium laden chips) from bed - keep spawn moist & cool inside over the winter - create new bed next spring
Sounds like you have everything you need except woodchips and sawdust (which are fairly easy to find). Oh, and build a glovebox to reduce contams (practice using it too).
Psilocybe cyanescens mycelium will grow from a brown rice flower cake. From there you can go to sterilized grain or straight to sawdust. I have had contamination issues with the brf to grain (maybe just me) but straight from brf to supplemented sawdust (10% bran) seems to be working great.
Azures and Cyans have very similar growth parameters, here's a link to an Azure growing guide which I found useful:
http://utenti.lycos.it/azurescens/data/taf_e.pdf
This has some good info, including hardiness zones/maps showing where they think Azures/Cyans will grow outside:
http://www.fungifun.org/English/Psilocybe-Azurescens-Outdoor-Cultivation
It's a bit more work than cubes, but Cyans are wonderful and beautiful mushrooms.
Good luck! -DD

To the OP, you're going to want to put that p cyanescens print up and save it for when you've gained more experience. It's not a beginner species for sure. It will need to be grown on woodchips outdoors, and not every climate will support it. They're native to coastal regions where they get a long, cold, wet fall. If your climate goes from hot to cold very fast, or you have short, dry falls, they won't grow in your area.
Get some cubensis to learn the ropes, because it will practically grow itself indoors in a terrarium, and then move to other, more difficult species. RR
