what language would you like to speak?

just a random question..

personally i want to learn latin, because its basically the foundation of most languages. i already know italian/english, so i want to get a new one started.

I know Latin. Not fluently, but maybe equivalent to a year or two at University level. At the time, I regretted learning a dead language, but it really does help me with English on a daily basis -- maybe because my teacher put a heavy emphasis on vocabulary and their English derivatives.

As for what I'd like to learn, Esperanto and Lojban both heavily pique my curiosity... But I guess I'd have to go for French or Chinese, as I'd like to learn a useful language.

ive been lookin around already, i found a torrent on thepiratebay that has rosetta stone with all of there languages offered, i think there is like 57 of them

edit: actually its 27 languages with 41 levels.

i'm fluent in german, spanish and english... would love to add another one... portuguese, italian and french would be fairly simple considering i already know spanish... and dutch would be another option since it is very similar to german... i hope i get around to that someday... my dream has always been learning japanese, though...

Latin is the foundation of languages that came from that area: Spanish, French, Italian; but certainly not the foundation of 'most' languages. Germanic languages are the most dominant native-speaking dialects in the EU, and since English is rooted in Germanic tongues I would put money on more people in the world knowing a Germanic based language than a Latin based language.
If so many Asian people could not speak English (in addition to their regional and national dialects), then I wouldn't be surprised if an ancient Asian dialect was the most widely used language root. I don't know if such a dialect ever existed (one that would link Chinese and Indian dialects to a common source), but it would not be a shocking revelation.

To the real substance of the thread: I would like to learn sign language, might come in handy when my mouth is filled in with cement.

There are two main language families:

Indo-european and Sino-Tibetan. Both groups come from distinct ancient language groups.

Indoeuropean languages include Europe, Middle east and India (plus America, where European languages are spoken, but not the native American languages)

Languages of Sino-Tibetan origins are those mainly in the far east of Asia.

A third, important language group is the smitic group which includes hebrew and Arabic.

My wife is teaching our 2 yr old daughter sign. It really fucks with me, cuz I cant remember the shit, and I have to go ask my woman wtf my SPEAKING, HEARING daughter is trying to tell me. I think its cool as hell, until Im running from one side of the house, to the other just so the wife says "She wants a cookie."

Personally, I have been trying to learn Tsalagi (Cherokee) for a couple years. I really should have done this earlier in life.
