I learned a little spanish this year. Got some of the basics before I slacked off and quit working on it. Still can't have a conversation but I pick up a lot of things that I didn't before when I hear it spoken. I will get back to it this year and try to improve my skills. Eventually I hope to be able to at least understand and have simple conversations.

I used the Pimsleur program. It is strictly an audio CD program which worked well for me because I could do it while I worked. I hear the Rosetta Stone is supposed to be a pretty good program also if you are committed to spending the time on it. Basically the best way to learn is to be able to speak it with another person IRL while you are learning. No program can substitute for real world interaction.

Totally... I think that the rosetta stone forces you to move your brain out of thinking in a language really well though... there's no "translating" it's just pure language using images. As close as you can get to immersion while sitting at home.

I figure, if I can learn 30 words a week, I'll have less trouble when it comes time for the real world interaction.

The window of opportunity for a person to learn new languages starts to close at a very young age, making it harder and harder to learn a new dialect as you get older.  Obviously it's very possible, and I would definitely recommend the Rosetta Stone software, I hear it's great.

When I was younger, and raised in a Jewish household, I went to Hebrew School 3x a week.  I went from when I was probably about 9 or so until when I was about 13 and it became a burden on my social life to not be able to go out after school 3x a week.  But, in those 4 years, I learned to read, write, and speak Hebrew.  I haven't used it in years, and i can no longer write it, can read very little of it, and can recite the prayers that I have memorized, but that's about it.  If I had gone to Israel during those 4 years, I would have been able to read signs, write the language, and while I may not have been able to hold a FULL conversation with someone who spoke it as their first language, I could have done pretty well. 

I find, that when you don't really have much of a choice but to learn a language is when you get the best results.  When suffer and I were in Morocco, we had a guy that was hired to ride on the bus with us, assist with head counting, hand out watter bottles, just little stuff like that.  He usually sat in the back of the bus alone, and just stared out the window.  But then we realized that he was probably about our age, and given that everyone else we were with was 50+, and we had nothing in common with most of them, we figured why not try to talk to him.  He spoke very limited English, and suffer speaks a little bit of Arabic - enough to get by.  This guy started sitting with us on the bus, and just talking to us in Arabic, pointing at things as we drove by, teaching us how to say stuff, etc.  Both of us would like to continue to try to learn Arabic, because I think it's an interesting language, and it actually sounds sort of similar to Hebrew, so maybe it would help me re-learn some of that too, if I wanted to down the road. 

Anyways...I've always said that when I have kids, I'm going to try to teach them as many languages as I can while they're young and their minds are fresh.  Whether that means hiring a bilingual nanny, or a tutor, or something along that line, I'd love my kids to be able to speak like 5-6 languages.  Sometimes I'll count in spanish to the little girl that I nanny for, or say Hebrew prayers or Arabic words, just so that her ears get used to the sounds, and maybe someday she'll be able to learn to say them.  Anywho, I've gone off on a huge tangent now, but Blink, I always thinks it's really admirable and cool when people can bust out and speak in different languages, so do it!  Maybe I'll stop procrastinating and use the Rosetta Stone software to learn some more Arabic  :thumbup:

If it works for you let me know. I need to learn Chinese and Japanese within 4 years or so.

I'm completely comfortable with Dutch and English, I understand German without effort but suck at producing it. (grammar/spelling)
With effort I can understand this or that in written French.

My Malay, Swahili and Japanese are WAY too poor to assume any real skill worth mentioning.

So from a practical point of view Dutch, English and German, in that order.

They say when you have a dream in a language, thats when you know you are fluent.

I am fluent in Finnish and almost Spanish, that is my major. Languages are key, I love being able to communicate with people. Living in that country of course is key, but knowing the basics before you go then you can perfect it when you are there.

Its extremely difficult the older you get to learn a language, but with determination and hard work, one can achieve myriad possibilities.

I Know English by default. But I can keep up pretty good with German. It just takes me a couple of umm's and uhh's before I can get out what I'm trying to say. I learned it the way schools teach it but I think that they can do a better job. The best way to learn it that way is to commit and not be a lazy ass about it. If you want to learn it you will.

But I just downloaded that Rosetta Stone problem and it seems like it's going to work really good. You can look at language like a musical instrument. You need to take on all the angles to learn it. You can't only learn chords on a guitar or the cymbals on drums. Just like you can't just learn words and grammar without saying it out loud.

That's why I think this program will be good. It says it to you and you can say it back while you're looking at it so your brain is surrounded and continuously thinking and observing.

You have to sort of hack your brain.

I wish the program had more languages though. If there are please tell me because I want to know.

I'm fluent in English of course and I totally suck with Spanish.
Been lazily learning some Chinese over the past 5 years, and man.. its hard. Of course I haven't studied it all that hardcore but it's still extremely difficult for me to pick up on and retain. Very interesting and awesome language though.

I used to have a somewhat decent grasp of German, but now I can barely put together a sentence. In my studies of the Kabbalah, I've ended up learning some Hebrew, but only vocabulary, not grammar. I also know a few Hindu mantras, but I can't actually tell you what all the words mean. So basically, I can pray in a couple different languages, but that's it.
