Very doubtful, considering Obama has at least let on to me way more diplomatic than even bill clinton.. if that is possible. He has already agreed to converse with all world leaders, without unrealistic pre existing conditions. Big step I would say.

speaking to people does not = ending imperialism and bullying.  especially from a politicians mouth.

obama has already gone back on a number of things he long supported, and if you do a little reading you will find that the anti war left is mad at him, and some of the more religious lefties aswell.  hes got alot of fairweather fans.

<Right, so he is going to End Marijuana prohibition like the people demand?>

Really? like that is the most important issue at the moment. I would love to see that just like so many other people, but to believe that it should be anything close to a top priority at this point, is insane.

Like, yes it is.  %70 of the worlds problems are directly caused by the prohibition of drugs, prostitution and other religious right ignorance crusades (to use an apt term liberally).

Economic issues centre squarely on prohibition when you get a holistic perspective.    $1.8 billion to farmers to not grow crops.  Marijuana, as a drug, is the #1 cash crop in the US at an artificiality inflated value and we import a majority of that from Canada, Mexico and South American countries.  Same for other drugs but their economic impact is much less significant than marijuana proportionately.  If Hemp as a crop could be grown it would replace the demand on trees for paper fibers and decrease demand on petrol supplies for rope and other textiles.  Hemp oil has variety of domestic and industrial applications that would replace a significant share of the petrol industry and would be an efficient means of renewable energy and naturally de-weed crop plantations for fewer chemicals needed to grow a weedless plantation as well as boosting Organic grower's crop production between hemp crop cycles.

How much do you know about the plight of Mexico and teh drug gang violence?  They're almost to military revolution if the US had the balls to send enough troops down there to do more than actually facilitate the drug trade.

The CIA and DEA actively assist in manufacture and distribution of cocaine and marijuana from South American countries like Bolivia.  It's not just our side of the globe either.  This si an issue that goes way back.  The Witch-Hunts and inquisition of the middle ages is directly synonymous with the oppression of drugs and psychedelic enlightenment.  The East Indian Trading company directly cultivated an opium market and addiction in China where it was proved that as long as supply could be maintained prohibition, no matter how strongly enforced, could never put a dent in usage or profits of smugglers.

The cost of prisons is insane and the large majority of prisoners are not violent offenders.  In fact violent offenders, murders, rapists, and child molesters (Most C/m serve less than five years) are released early due to overcrowding while dealers of marijuana are given longer sentences (10 years~avg, some much more).

But yeah....this isn't an important or high priority issue...

With that attitude you'll live in oppression for the rest of your life and deserve it in-my-not-so-humble-opinion.

Ok, so where is this statistic found?? do you have a link?? I am not arguing the problems brought on my the prohibition of all illegal drugs, but there are things we need to work on first. Yes, we can make alot of money taxing rather than arresting, and decrimanlizing these substances would cut back on anywhere from 50 to 75% of violent crime... But we need to create public works projects to provide jobs(a logical economic stimulus) stop destroying other nations(so we don't have to pay to rebuild them) and stop deploying all our military resources. We should defend from home, until it is absolutely nesscesary to do otherwise. Those thins alone, would save us billons a month.

people have high expectations of Obama, and he has a certain obligation to meet them. I really doubt he is going to start a new war, seeing as how people expect him to be the opposite of Bush.

I'm against him adding new government programs. When the government tries to do anything it just fucks it up. I do community service anyway, and expect nothing out of it. If I have to join a government funded community service, things would probably get complicated and bureaucratic.

He probably won't legalize any drugs, but he has expressed a desire to treat drugs as more of a health issue than a criminal one.  And since you know nothing about government, I feel I should inform you that there are no federal laws on prostitution or gambling.  Those are all matters of state and local law.

I was born and raised in California.  I know what it's like.  But I'm not talking about some abstract group called "liberals."  I'm talking about Barack Obama.  And last I checked, you can still own a gun in California.  Thus your second amendment rights are protected.

Have you read up on the heller decision? Some might say california bs bans and regulations are against 2A, and last I checked obamas voting record he is a liberal.

"Amicus curiae briefs

Because of the controversial nature of the case, it garnered much attention from many groups on both sides of the gun rights issue. Many of those groups filed amicus curiae (friend of the court) briefs, about 47 urging the court to affirm the case and about 20 to remand it.[10]

A majority of the members of Congress[11] signed the brief authored by Stephen P. Halbrook advising that the case be affirmed overturning the ban on handguns not otherwise restricted by Congress.[12] Vice President Dick Cheney joined in this brief, acting in his role as President of the United States Senate, and breaking with the George W. Bush administration's official position.[11] Republican candidate for President and Arizona Senator John McCain also signed the brief. Democratic candidate and Illinois Senator Barack Obama did not.[13]"

I'm looking over that decision right now, and I don't see how it contradicts California gun laws.  The decision basically says that gun ownership is an individual right, but that like most rights, it is not an unlimited right.  As for Obama's record, I do not deny that he is a liberal, but "liberal" is a very broad term.  He may not have a high rating from the NRA, but he's not going to confiscate your guns.

but obama was in favor of the dc gun ban, a ban we now know of as unconstitutional, wouldn't you say hes not in favor of gun rights then?

The heller decision also touchs on the gun lock issue, which california also has.

It's not so much about what he's supported in the past, but what he's going to do in office.  He has said that he supports the Supreme Court's decision, and we can expect him to abide by it.

I'm not familiar enough with that particular law, but if it goes against that decision, then someone in California is free to challenge it.

A bit loose on facts there. He said why Americans would need a AK-47. The ones you can buy legally are semi-automatic not automatic, automatics are already heavily regulated and cost the same as a new economy car.. And military weapons are exactly what the 2nd amendment is all about. A ban on sporting rifles, shotguns, handguns, would be more constitutional than a ban on semi automatic Ak-47'S. So yes he is either completly against the second amendment or he doesnt understand it.

Re: King Obama [Re: Silversoul]

Obama will not mess with the second amendment. It would be political suicide. Americans like their guns. I spew liberalism but I also own guns. The Republicant's believe it or not have done more to control guns than the Democrats.

Read on.

- Anti-gun crusaders seem worried about the advent of a Republican administration. Heaven knows why. Republicans, in recent years, have managed to do nearly as much damage to the Second Amendment as Democrats.

In 1969, journalist William Safire asked Richard Nixon what he thought about gun control. "Guns are an abomination," Nixon replied. According to Safire, Nixon went on to confess that, "Free from fear of gun owners' retaliation at the polls, he favored making handguns illegal and requiring licenses for hunting rifles."

It was President George Bush, Sr. who banned the import of "assault weapons" in 1989, and promoted the view that Americans should only be allowed to own weapons suitable for "sporting purposes."

It was Governor Ronald Reagan of California who signed the Mulford Act in 1967, "prohibiting the carrying of firearms on one's person or in a vehicle, in any public place or on any public street." The law was aimed at stopping the Black Panthers, but affected all gun owners.

Twenty-four years later, Reagan was still pushing gun control. "I support the Brady Bill," he said in a March 28, 1991 speech, "and I urge the Congress to enact it without further delay."

One of the most aggressive gun control advocates today is Republican mayor Rudolph Giuliani of New York City, whose administration sued 26 gun manufacturers in June 2000, and whose police commissioner, Howard Safir, proposed a nationwide plan for gun licensing, complete with yearly "safety" inspections.

Another Republican, New York State Governor George Pataki, on August 10, 2000, signed into law what The New York Times called "the nation’s strictest gun controls," a radical program mandating trigger locks, background checks at gun shows and "ballistic fingerprinting" of guns sold in the state. It also raised the legal age to buy a handgun to 21 and banned "assault weapons," the sale or possession of which would now be punishable by seven years in prison.

Gun control crusaders argue that the Republicans are simply yielding to grassroots pressure, to gain political advantage. But polls show little evidence of such pressure.

A Gallup/CNN/USA Today survey taken in June 1999 – only two months after the Littleton massacre – showed that the number of Americans who favored stricter gun laws had declined by 20 percent since 1990.

Public support for gun control has dwindled even further since then. An Associated Press poll released on the one-year anniversary of the Littleton shootings shows that Americans favor strict enforcement of existing laws over new gun laws – the exact position of the National Rifle Association (NRA) – by 42 to 33 percent.

That same month, a survey by the Pew Research Center showed that only 6 percent of Americans believed that tougher gun laws would prevent future school shootings.

Meanwhile, a Tarrance Group poll has shown that only 5 percent of Americans want gunmakers and gun dealers held responsible for misuse of firearms.

Clearly, the pressure for gun control is not coming from the grassroots. It comes from those layers of society that the left calls the "ruling classes" – academics, Hollywood stars, Washington insiders and multibillion-dollar media conglomerates.

The latter are particularly influential in pushing anti-gun propaganda. A study by the Media Research Center released in January 2000 showed that television news stories calling for stricter gun laws outnumbered those opposing such laws by a ratio of 10 to 1.

The blame for this media bias is traditionally assigned to "liberal journalists." And, indeed, most journalists do hold left-of-center views. A 1996 survey of working journalists by the Roper Center and the Freedom Forum showed that 89 percent had voted for Bill Clinton in 1992. Only 4 percent identified themselves as Republicans and only 2 percent as conservatives.

Yet, their "liberal" views probably have less impact on the media’s anti-gun bias than most people assume. Rank-and-file reporters have little power to influence the political spin even of their own stories.

When I worked at the New York Post in the mid-1980s, I found the newsroom filled with liberals. They grumbled constantly about the paper’s conservative slant. But they went along with it, because it was company policy.

Liberal news organizations are no different. Political bias comes from the top. Rank-and-file reporters simply do what they are told.

Those of us who cherish our Second Amendment rights are keeping our fingers crossed about George W. Bush. But the monolithic commitment America’s "ruling classes" have shown toward gun control makes one wonder whether even a president is free to buck the current.
