My Conservative Right-Wing Republican Easter

So my girlfriend's uncle Dave is part of this group called the Union League. Ever heard of them? They were formed during the Civil War by the republican party to celebrate the ideals of the Union, and they worship Abe Lincoln in a weird cultlike fashion. Not really, but there's pics of him EVERYWHERE in their clubhouse, which is a fancy old old building on Park Ave. in NYC, in midtown. Anyhow, they created the union league and did something really decent - helped escaped slaves find jobs by giving them jobs in the Union LEague itself. Kinda twisted though, cause they all ended up being butlers and domestics and coatcheckers and what not.

And now it still exists today and a lot of the staff that works there are descendants of the original freed slaves that worked there. But it's really freaky cause you go to these Easter and Thanksgiving brunches there with like, seriously, the best food I've ever had in my entire life, GOUR-fucking-MET. And it's all white republicans being served by a completely black staff, all black cooks, wearing white gloves and it's very very eerie.

It's just weird and I wanted to share that.

Nope, every family gets a table and they have guests and stuff like my girlfriend's uncle has a table with like 10 seats and there's this huge buffet and it's all black servants serving the food on to your plate, and then black waiters and waitresses. Not even latino or asian or anything, strictly black. Mind you, they're all really cheerful and nice and I'm sure they get paid damn well too, but it's just really eerie. Like imagine sitting in this all-white den served by black people while a 20 foot portrait of Abe Lincoln hangs over the room.

I need to start waking up this early every day. Gotta look for jobs, finish unpacking, all that good shit. My roommate moves in tomorrow and most of my stuff is in his room. I set up two bookcases and there's no room for his stuff on them.

A black or working man becoming a republican makes as much sense as a chicken taking out stock in KFC.

Sounds like good food though.

The civil war was fought over economics and creating a powerful federal government, things the republican party still supports over state's rights. It wasn't about slavery. Every civilized country in the world ended slavery without a civil war. Ours could have done the same. Lincoln wanted an all powerful federal government and 'kingly' president, and the slavery issue gave him a justification to pull it off. Slavery to Lincoln was what WMD's or 'bringing democracy to Iraq' is to dubya. It was then, and still is to this day, about the money.
