Perlite question....
    #966148 - 10/16/02 02:29 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

Alright I just birthed 11 cakes into my fruiting chamber about an hour and a half ago. I am using perlite for humidification. So anyways i just went to look at em and I noticed that there wasnt any water on the sides of the chamber, and it didnt look fogged or humid at all inside.

Did I do something wrong? Did I not put enough water into the perlite or something?

Also, does the chamber have to be completely air tight? I do have a lid for it, so I just have saran wrap on the top to cover it. Its pretty tightly on, but not completely air tight.

Anyways, any help is greatly appreciated....

PEace,
Lev

If you wan't it air tight you can mist the top of your terranium and place the saran wrap on it it will stick and seal this way!
Used it on fish tanks long time ago.
As long as your perlit is moist it should do the trick how long have you had the moist perlite in there?
Also what are your temps?

Yeah I got the saran wrap on tightly on the top now, taped it down.

The perlite seems pretty moist, its all been in there for about 1 and half, I set up the chamber like 10 mins before I birthed the cakes...

And I'm not quite sure of my temps, I have a heater set up in the area where my chamber is, I'd imagine the temp is probably somewhere in the 70's.

Anyways, thanks for your help =)

Peace,
Lev

Perlite takes a while to humidify a terrarium, check it again tomorrow, it should be goo then. In the mean time, mist.

So to mist I just spray water on the walls? How much? How often?

Also my fruiting chambers are kinda small, and the cakes are kinda close to the walls, I'm afraid water will get on the cakes I mist.... Will it hurt anything if water does get on em?

Thanks and peace,
Levi

By this evening you should see a foggy mist appearing on the sides , it takes humidity awhile to actually build up where you can see it . Mist lightly 2-3 times a day , have you considered adding a bubbler ? Yes spray at the sides , or from up high so that only a fine mist blows around , you do not want huge water drops pounding or sitting on the cakes .
Good Luck

Yeah I think the saran wrap is a bad idea too, but I gotta use it, cause its all I got. My fruiting chambers didnt come with lids.

Anyways, thanks for your help everyone!

Peace,
Lev

dont worry about condensation, perlite always does the trick....
i NEVER see condensation inside my fruiting chamber... never ever ever ever ever ever never! not one drop!
nadda zilch zero nothing....
but my cakes are happy as shit.. in fact the humidity is probably a bit too high.. i get fuzzies at the base of the stems of my mushies....
the lid does not have to be tight....

My iguana likes to have just a BIT of standing water in the bottom of his perilite...like 1/8th to 1/4 of an inch.  This possibly might not be what others think is right...but so far, so good for the iguana!!

We to have perilite floating in a container , in fact every 4-5 days we add some more water to keep it at a set point . Also use peroxide water to reduce possibility of contams . Works great so far !
