Perlite Question/Novice Grower
    #326369 - 05/26/01 02:42 PM (24 years, 11 hours ago)

I am sure this has been asked before, I just want to make sure I'm getting this right... Ok, I am getting ready to grow for my first time.. I am not a novice user, jsut a novice grower... I have already rounded up the jars, vermiculite, rice flour, perlite, and a little rubbermaid grow chamber... After I get the jars colonized, and birth them into the chamber, I can use ONLY perlite for humidification? I know I should not be lazy, and go all the way with a good chamber, but I am on limited funds... If I put wet perlite in the bottom of my container, and place the cakes on top of this(on foil or something), I won't need ANYTHING else to produce humidity?? I am planning on either poking some air-exchange holes in the container, or using the open-and-fan technique... But am I wrong in thinking this is all I will need to do?

That sounds just about right. Perlite will get the job done. Nothing to be ashamed of. You might want a little misting bottle, though.

If the cakes dry out, you can put some casing material (jiffy mix, etc.) on top of it. Then mist the casing material to remoisten. It's a little more gentle than dunking and the pins grow great in the casing material. Scratch the cake's surface w/ a clean fork before you lay on the casing material. You'll get better pinning.
