Using meditation to focus on an idea, task etc. I have bad concentration problems

I like to meditate for 10, 20 or 40mins before i go to bed just focusing on my breath and when any thoughts come i don't attach myself to them and just focus on breathing. This brings me a deep sense of peace and wellbeing.
During the day when i have to do stuff for college or I'm trying to think about something, I'm constantly detracted, i find it very hard to focus on a task.
Do you know of any way of meditating but instead of focusing on the breath you sit there and focus on a thought or idea?
My concentration and attention problems are really negatively effecting my life.
Thank You

choline, piracetam and oxiracetam/aniracetam (whichever one agrees with you most) are great for concentration.
also, it would probably be more effective if you meditate before going to college.

From references i've heard. The best time to meditate is between 11am to Noon. 11 pm to midnight. Or in the middle of the night. Roughly 2-3 am.
Certain frequency music.
Here's one i like to meditate to.

You can bring the mediative mind set into your daily life. The main thing about meditation is to let go of your thoughts, focusing on your breath is a way of practicing this skill but its not the entire lesson in itself.
In your everyday life, practice trying to let go of your thoughts in the same way that you do when focusing on your breath, just relax and let you mind become still, the thoughts don't matter, just let them float away.
When i meditate i usually don't focus on my breath anymore, i focus on the stillness itself. The breathing exercises are a useful tool but are not essential to attaining this state, eventually the mind learns how to gently will itself into this state.

There is a practice called Zhine in Tibetan Buddhism, which translates into "calm abiding" or something similar. When you first start it will be forced Zhine, then natural Zhine, and finally ultimate Zhine...all of which are kind of self-explanatory.
What you do is take an object (the author of the book I got this from uses the Tibetan letter "A") and paste it on the wall or on something which is about a foot and half away from your eyes. In the beginning you will concentrate on this external object, but as more stability is achieve you can move to an internal object of concentration.
Sit with legs crossed, spin straight, hands folded in lap, head tilted sightly down so that your eyes will be allowed to gaze straight out. Keep your eyes relaxed and open, but not wide open. While concentrating breath naturally and don't react to anything, blinking, swallowing, or readjusting your position.
I ended up just drawing a picture with some triangles one inside another surrounded by different colored circles which I use for my Zhine.
I got this from "The Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep," by Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche. If you have any more questions, I can post up the answers from this chapter.
Another technique, which is Hindu, is called Trataka...which is very similar to Zhine, except you use a candle flame. Gently gaze at the tip of the wick without blinking. When you close your eyes focus on the after image and try to keep it stable in the center of your vision.

Whenever I notice my mind going off somewhere, I bring my attention into my body... the physical sensation of my skin and tissues. It shuts up the thinking and puts me right back into the moment. Always try to keep some awareness of your body while you are working or doing things, it really anchors you to the moment.
Read about mindfulness meditation. Jon-Kabat Zinn's books are great, he also has videos online.
-------------------- Welcome evermore to gods and men is the self-helping man. For him all doors are flung wide: him all tongues greet, all honors crown, all eyes follow with desire. Our love goes out to him and embraces him, because he did not need it. ~ R.W. Emerson, "Self-Reliance"
