pub advice on becoming a botanist?
    #9605151 -

I am interested in pursuing the field of a botanist.  What to you would be the pros and cons of this?

How much schooling would be necessary?  How much of a need is there right now?  how much of a need do you foresee in the future?

I have nothing to add except that I think botany is pretty cool and I hope someone posts some good info on the subject.  :strokebeard:

i don't know about botany specifically but i'd imagine there is much more use for people with any practical know how about sustainable living, it's a much wider subject and you can find many places that would teach you all you want to know about plants and also will give this knowledge some practical CONTEXT! and from there you can dictate the future instead of wallowing in this muck we've made of society :smirk:

good luck!

I have a degree in botany, though I don't work as one right now.

There's plenty of jobs available. You can go into ecology or biotechnology; choose the former if you like being out in the field, choose the latter if you want good job security (and you don't mind being in a lab). Either way, you'll need at least 3 years of university.

Like most sciences it all depends on the level you want to perform at.

You can work in a lab studying plants and things, and usually do it with a 4-year degree.

If you want to design your own experiments from scratch, publish papers and perform original research you'll need a Ph.D. which usually consists of about 12 years of school (after high school).

Depends where you do it. In Australia it doesn't take as long:
Bachelors - 3 years
Honours - 1 year
PhD - 3 years, maximum 3.5 years (there's a time limit).

In theory you can get your PhD 7 years after high school, but in practice it's more like 8. But that's still much better than the US system. In Europe it's pretty similar; a 3.5 year limit on PhDs. You can get a scholarship to do your PhD in Germany. I'm applying this year.
