How do these guys get paid? I dont really understand the field, I know you can teach schools, but if i go into a field in biology, I wouldnt wanna teach school. Im thinkin there is some kind of job in the field that they walk around find plants and study them or make/find new strains/medicines stuff like that.. Is there? If so.. How would those guys get paid? Or am I getting it confused with something else?

You should look into becoming a technician for a botanist. Plenty are involved in corss-bredding/genetic engineering etc. The pay isn't very good however.

Im starting to get really interested in the study of plants, I used to want to aim for mycologist, but thats alot of years in the field before your out of college. With plants, I want to do something like looking for new medications, crossbreeding, new strains, that kind of stuff, I just dont see how they would get paid maybe by the hour? Albert hoffman comes to mind, he would walk around and find stuff to expiriment with.

I really have no idea.. You could write books? A lot of botanists/biologists do that Terrence McKenna, Dale Pendell, Schultes, hell, even Stamets
But Hofmann worked for some pharmaceutical company, I believe Sandoz.
It's going to take a lot of time in college, basically. And even then I don't think you'd be guaranteed to have the dream job you speak of.
One thing is for sure though You should reach for whatever your dream is well, grab.. more so than reach

damn. that is a really awesome looking program. I wish you the best of luck. I'm starting soon to major in Biology.. I've yet to decide what I want to emphasize on though. It's down to either mycology, botany, or.. something.

Mycology would be the dream, Its too much, last time I looked you needed so much to go into mycology. Botany seems like it would be less time in college. Im interested in both fields, and in school im sure I wouldnt even mind studying it. which is
Im checking out the links you guys posted thanks guys

If you want to go into botany or many other "biological sciences" there are two basic "levels" of jobs:
1. Ph.D. level jobs 2. All other jobs.
If you really want to do whatever you want, you'll need a Ph.D. and tenure, which is a lot of years. If this isn't your plan, a 4 year degree will suffice.

If mycology is the dream, don't let the excess of school crush it for you. It will be well worth it.

I guess Il need to look into It more, but from what ive seen it was like 8 years of college, which means Id be around 30 when I get out of college. It kind of seems like too much. Im wanting something around like 5 years max.
It might be better If i ride around to some of the colleges near me and speak of it to them, its kind of hard to find stuff online about it.

Some do research for universities who pay them with grant money. Others teach the subject in schools. Still others work as consultants for companies who might need to rely on their expertise.

A Ph.D is typically 4 years of undergrad + 5 of grad school then about a 3 year post-doc.
If you want 4 years, you could go for your bachelors.
