Casing advice needed..

I have 6 pint cakes fully colonized ready to come out of their jars. They are B+ strain and the cakes are made from rye. I am definetly going to case, but I am trying to decide which method would be the best. Right now all I have is vermiculite, and I'm thinking about using the tek which requires nothing else, but I'd rather get more casing materials if it will make a big difference in the final results. Also, can I sterilize the vermiculite in my pressure cooker? What does everyone think?

Curious, do you have jars of colonized rye grain? Or, or rye flour cakes. Because you are talking about "cakes". Rather than grain.

IMHO, 50/50+ is about the best casing tek  around. I use 50/50++. The extra plus is because I add a little coir to the mix.

For big shrooms, spawn a dung based pasturized substrate.

I have colonized jars of rye grain. When using the 50/50+ tek, how do I sterilize?

Mix up your casing ingredients.
Place them all into an autoclavable bag - remove any air - seal.
Place into the PC add your water into your PC - PC at 15 psi for 45 mins.

OR

Mix up your casing and place the mix into a pan bake it in the oven at 275 for 1 hour.

I have had great results pasturizing in the microwave. Just mix up the casing materials in a bowl, zap for 10 minutes, stirring a couple of times. If you have a digital thermometer, the ones used to measure the temp of meat, stick it in the center of the mix and make sure its at least 170.

Pasturize. Any way that is easy for you. The raccoon bakes dry dung at 170F.

Use a meat thermometer to insure it all gets pasturized at an even temp. Like cooking a small chicken takes XX minutes & cooking a larger turkey takes XXXX minutes.

The bigger the batch, the longer it takes to get the center ~ to the right temp.

Then, hydrate with pre/boiled water. You do not want the substrate TOO WET.

If you squeeze the hydrated substrate like superman & only get a tiny drop. The moisture content is about right.
