Popcorn to coir

I've a big jar of popcorn that's colonized about 30-50%. I was wondering if I could spawn it to coir now or if I have to wait until it gets to 100%. I'm just wondering cause it is taking fucking FOREVER to colonize.

I figure if I spawn it to sterilized coir now in the FC with a ratio of about 1-2:1 coir to popcorn, it'll colonize fast enough to fight of contams.

But, then again, I could be asking for trouble.

Help, please?

Don't do it.

If your popcorn is going that slow there's something wrong.

Popcorn should look like it's colonizing extremely fast due to the low surface area of the large grains.

You're just beggin for contams if you spawn grain that's only 30-50% colonized.

It's going slow from low temperatures that I can't do anything about.

It hasn't stalled, it's just moving at a staggeringly slow rate.

What if I picked through the chunks that are well colonized and spawned them to a mycobag filled with sterile coir?

How long has the jar taken to get this far? What are you using as a filter? Why did you inoculate only 1 jar of popcorn? How did you sterilize the jar? ETC.....

And we don't sterilize coir (or any substrate), we pasteurize them. ~Pixie~

If it's moving at a slow rate in the jar it's going to move at a slow rate while spawning to bulk.

You're asking for contams.

Do it if you want, you may get lucky...

Oh and what temps are you colonizing at?

Mid-sixties. Can't do anything about it, let's just leave it at that.

It was PC'd for an hour and a half at 15psi, inoculated with 5cc's of GT spores (it's a big fucking jar)

Been a month since then.

Didn't have visible growth until a week and a half ago.

You CAN do something about it...

The growth is slow because of the temperatures, when I had no resources, I wrapped jars in layers of clothing to keep them warm until I could afford a aquarium heater...

pay 9.99 on ebay for a heater, follow the 'heatbomb' tek, and u will be done 4x faster

Just looked at the popcorn. Some pinkish growth is on some of the kernels. My last hope now is to take the colonized kernels and move them to coir. Oh well, I was surprised I got any growth on that shit. I was sure I was going to lose it cause of newbie idiocy.

I also have two brown rice jars that are growing uncontaminated at a normal speed for being used as a grain. What if I used those, too?

Or should I just take the growth from the brown rice and throw out the popcorn?

What would you do?

Throw out the popcorn, it sounds like it's a bacterial contamination and the pink stuff are metabolites.

What about taking the growth from the brown rice jars and moving them to coir? It's sterile and (as of yet) there are no contaminates, but I now know that brown rice is NOT a suitable substrate. I bet if I moved it to coir, the growth would take off like a motherfucker. Right now, it looks like Einstein's head is buried in the rice with his hair poking out XD

I had the same problem with popcorn. it remained about 70% colonized.

I cased it, i regret not spawning it to bulk though.

Are you sure, though? I'm running a pretty big risk of contaminating by letting them continue to sit in that jar. It could be another month until I get to 100%. Be a shame to let all that go to waste.

dood, if you have pinkish anything on popcorn you are cultivating lipstick mold.  ABANDON SHIP.  A grain jar inoculated with LC taking a month at any temp to get to 50-70% is confirmation you have a contam. BAIL IT!  A good reason to stick to 1/2 full qt jars for spawn as suggested in RR's vids.

I'm willing to bet it's not lipstick mold.

I'm pretty confident it's metabolites.

you should take a black marker and draw a line where the myc is now. check in 2 days. see if its growing. it should grow in brf/verm cake like 1/4 in 2 days. or at least thats what mine are doing:shitfan:

I think its more likely to be a lipstick mold but thats just my experience from a 3/4 year run of using popcorn as spawn.

no harm in letting the mold grow though?

I once heard that popcorn develops small discolorations, not always mold. Only if it spreads is it a contam..

I could be wrong..
