Possible lipstick mold on popcorn
    #1378254 - 03/15/03 01:28 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I don't know if this is lipstick mold on my popcorn or not. Any input is appreciated. It appears that corn can/does turn red once colonization starts (here)

The jars were innoculated on 03/08 with a B+ syringe. I believe it is the syringe that was bad because I have 7qts with PESA and they are doing just fine. The corn was prepared exactly the same and even came from the same batch. The possible contam has not grown at all after showing up a few days later.

Sorry for the crappy pics:

[EDIT]:Here is a picture of the corn after it came from the sterilizer before innoculation

Yes they are contaminated with a red mold, possibly listick, you got to throw it out.
The problem is most probably in the sysringe, so don't use it anymore.

Yeah the jars have already been removed from the other non contaminated jars. The red has started to disappear once I placed it in it's own incubator.

The B+ syringe was a purchased syring from a vendor

Well it is kinda my fault since the spores aren't exactly fresh. They have been around for 6months or so but stored in my fridge. The other strains from him are doing fine and they were purchased at the same time.

That's no problem.
As long as the syringe haven't been tampered, it doesn't matter how fresh they are. I've used syringes dated back to December of 1999, and they worked fine for me.
I'm guessing you either had poor sterilization techniques, or more likely the syringe was contaminated from the get-go. Contact your vendor, more times then none, he/she will provide you a replacement for no extra charge.

Good luck,
daba

Well I guarantee it wasn't the sterilization teks because the same batch of corn is doing just fine in the PESA jars. So if it is a contam then it was from the getgo in the syringe.
