'On the Duty of Civil Disobedience,' by Henry David Thoreau
(while your at it, read 'Walden')

A lot of people I know, got a lot out of 'Atlas Shrugged,' by Ayn Rand. I don't like her fiction though and prefer her non-fiction, 'For The New Intellectual' is a good introduction to her Objectivist Philosophy.

'The Seven Mysteries of Life,' by Guy Murchie is a wonderful book which explores science and philosophy, it's encyclopedic in scope and ties many things together quite beautifully.

'Cosmic Trigger,' by Robert Anton Wilson. Prepare to re-program your bio-computer.

The books that have had the greatest effect on me are the series of books written by Carlos Casteneda about the teachings of Don Juan. They are spectacular. They teach you about yourself and the world, they are a great tool.

Whoa, Evolving!  I think you're recommendation for Cosmic Trigger should come with a warning! :ooo:   I just picked up this book last night, I'm about one-third through it, and it's already fucking with my head.  Some profound and enlightening stuff, my friend....proceed with caution.

I havent read Cosmic Trigger yet, but it is on my list (along with all RAW's books) but I have read and been working through Prometheus Rising and Quantum Psychology. These are exercise manuals which will help you to reprogram how you think. If you can get through either without getting sick about your life up to that point, you havent been doing the exercises. The other book I would say go GET, is Undoing youself with energized meditation by Chris Hyatt, excellent book along the same lines but a little more simple in approach, perhaps more of a starter book for the others.

BE HERE NOW, The Lama Foundation, 1973. Because it was the vehicle through I first Realized the meaning of the word 'spiritual' in it's most profound sense; and because it was the seed that grew into a seeking that led to 3 university degrees and a lifetime of love for Truth.

The Way of a Pilgrim - Translated by R.M. French (Anonymous author) Because the Pilgrim showed me that the Path I learned from BE HERE NOW exists in the West as well as the East [Duh!]

Writings From the Philokalia on Prayer of the Heart - Kadloubovsky & Palmer. Because the Pilgrim carried a copy of the Philokalia [Love of Truth/Beauty] along with his Bible.

The Gospel According to Thomas. Because it showed me that there were other Gospels written outide of the canonical ones, and that the canonical one's were selected by a few men with their own agendas, much of which was political, not spiritual. Futhermore, I should be able to read the other Gospels, Acts and Apocalyses that were available during the early years of Christianity, and decide for myself, with the Grace of God, what shape my spirituality should take, even if it is destined to be 'outside the boxes' available today (e.g., Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, Catholic, Byzantine, etc.). I am a pilgrim, and pilgrims frequently walk alone.

Off the top of my head I'd say :
Ayn Rand 'Fountainhead" - The first book i read that made me 'think' diffrently.
M. shelly 'Frankenstein' because it is heartbreaking to be The Monster. So diffrent from the theatric portryal. A real study on human emotion.

I would have to say that the most life changing book series for me has been Conversations with God, an uncommon dialog. It started off as one book, but then turned into a trilology, and then had a few spin offs. In it the author has a conversation with god, and the material that we have is a great portion of that conversation. I would recommend it to anyone, believer or non, because it offers great practical insight into many things in day to day life that I feel we could all use.

A very recent life changer was Twelve by Nick McDonell. An absolutely incredible piece of literature.

Life changing? As in your life was going in one direction, then reading a book altered that direction?

1) Atlas Shrugged - Ayn Rand

2) Journey to Ixtlan -- Carlos Castaneda

Many of the other books mentioned here were excellent books that I consider must-reads (Stranger in a Strange Land, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Slaughterhouse Five, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) but I personally would not label them "life-changing". I can see how others might, though.

For me an abbreviated list would be.

Johnny Got His Gun; Dalton Trumbo

Siddhartha and Knulp (2 separate books); Herman Hesse. Both are very eye opening.

Fight Club; Chuck Palahniuk

Stranger In A Strange Land; Heinlein of course.

This list won't work for everyone but at least one will make you rethink your life priorities

The Timothy Zahn Star Wars books
Terry Pratchett - Men at Arms

I won't say they're huge literary achievements but reading those books made me read about 50 others, in English mainly, haven't read many books in German since 96..

i must reply.
robert anton wilson killed who i was before, and introduced me to the person that alan watts wanted me to be, which reminded me of who i became when i started reading hesse. ken kesey was in there monkeywrenching at the same time as tom robbins, so it's hard to distinguish which were the most profound changes.
but i'll still refer back to alan watts.

starting with "Where The Wild Things Are" when i was 3.
