Possible roadblock in my sobriety
    #9550987 -

Well as many of you may or may not know I havent had any alcohol since new years. Ive been able to resist it fairly well by not buying it.

However, a friend called me today. He did something that really pissed me off and wants to make it up to me in free booze. Id feel bad declining his offer since Ive been evasive to hang out for the past few days, but I really dont want to slip back into drinking allday everyday.

There is a good chance he'd understand if I tell him I quit, but thenagain he may be like "aw come on man you can have one, just dont overdo it" and then Id overdo it. The problem is the propsect of alcohol seems very attractive to me.

I know how that feels.  I'm also trying the quitting thing (not alcohol). I called a friend who owed me a bit and asked if he could help me out.  He got all pissed off at me, cussed me out for not quitting and is just being an asshole now.

That shit just makes me want to get high.

I guess that's different that your situation actually.

I have been able to quit drinking liquor recently.  I tend to lose my mind on that shit but so far beer seems to allow me to relax a bit and keep my head on straight at the same time.

I would just say no, try to avoid the shit, and settle it when you have a few more days/weeks under your belt.

Good luck with it all, I've screwed up a few times so far but as long as I keep taking forward steps I feel like shit just might be ok.

It's a roadblock if you decide to let it be one.  You have made all the choices regarding your use of alcohol, and you can continue to do so.  What do you want?

Preventing your friend from feeling bad with a refusal is not truly the issue, IMO.  The real issue is the type of life experience you want to create for yourself.

I figured as much. I know Im just makeing excuses because I still want to drink. Is that a bad thing? Or something my mind just naturally does?

Ive made up my mind to tell him I quit...I know this will happen alot more though.

It's neither bad nor good.  Drinking feels good, else we wouldn't risk our health/wealth/driver's license in order to continue doing it.

I tend to see my desire to be in an altered state as an indication that I am not enjoying my life at the moment.  It's sort of a smoke alarm, and I treat it as such.

What are you doing in your daily life to relish being alive?  Are you dissatisfied?  Is there anything you could do, besides drinking, to be more satisfied?

Ultimately, we need to decide which "ingredients" will harmonize to create a uniquely enjoyable life experience.  If alcohol doesn't mix well with the other ingredients in your life, then leave it out.  If what remains doesn't seem spicy or flavorful, then experiment with some seasoning.

Sounds like an excuse to drink, not a roadblock.  IME, overcoming addiction is nothing but finding new kinds of ways to deal with those kinds of situations.

If I were you, I would drink with your friend.  Life is short, you know?  What if you declined his offer and stayed home and had a boring night, only to be run over by a car tomorrow morning?

Thats terrible advice.  You must not know much about alcoholism. Alcoholics live a miserable existence of perpetual drunkenness, anger, sadness, and hopelessness.  By drinking with his friend, he wouldn't be living it up and enjoying life.  He's much better off staying sober. If he has a drink, he'll most likely have another, then another and another and so on.  More than likely, he'll end up being drunk constantly again and have to quit and probably detox all over again.  Don't do it man, alcohol is not your friend.
