Re: good/cheap sources of protein? [Re: Cannashroom]

I would recommend non-denatured whey protein powder. It's a lot better for you than the regular stuff. But remember, you should keep in mind that it is a dietary supplement. Don't eat like Chong does in Cheech & Chong where all he did was chug protein drinks...that is pretty bad for you and an overload of protein in your diet can cause you to become angry and irritated more often...I don't know why that is, but it's true.

To pack on weight, you need to eat a good amount of carbohydrates as well. I would recommend this: 30% protein, 50% carbs, 20% fats in terms of ratios of daily caloric intake in order to get bigger.

You might want to calculate your BMR (basal metabolic rate) based on your age and gender...this can help you determine how many calories you should be getting per day, in order to maintain your weight. If you want to gain, then tack on 500 more to your answer.

Keep in mind that a good way to work out with weights is to start at your max, work yourself until you cannot do any more reps, then lower the weight a little, and repeat until you cannot do any more reps. This helps build endurance muscle and makes your muscle more dense.

All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particle of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter."  --Max Planck

I'll say it again. He is worried that he is underweight.

He isn't eating enough to maintain a healthy weight in the first place. I don't need to explain why I think that suggesting a greater level of energy expenditure is a good idea. Go make a thread all about how great cardio is; because it is great, but not necessarily for this guy at this point in his life.

25 pounds in four years, between the ages of 14-18 (correct me on the age). Sorry, but I find that to be a normal weight increase, and it is also normal to see a change in body composition at this age. There are far too many variables for you to credit cardio as you do.

Cardio is essential to keep athletically balanced but you will gain more mass without it in the early stages of putting on weight, you just might not be able to do as many situps as Lefty, but you will weigh more than him.

eggs, what else?

tried cottage cheese the other day, tastes like shit.

I'm looking for cheap sources of protien that i can eat a lot of and it won't make me sick or anything.

what's a good price for protien shakes?

I only weigh like 110-111 pounds or something, 5'4, i might be underweight but not sure.

I do a bunch of strength training stuff and high intensity cardio, I'm just looking for good sources of protein and any advice on good protein shakes.

the OP's original quotes.  from what he posted it doesnt sound like hes concerned about being underweight, he said he THINKS he might be, then the next post he makes explains the exercises he ALREADY does, including cardio.  the only thing hes looking for was a source of protein to add to his workout diet.

and then you jump in with:

Quote:
If you really want to put on weight then get rid of the cardio. It burns up too many calories if you're trying to put on mass.

which is completely false and i called you on it.

25lbs in 4 years normal?  yeah maybe if i jumped up by a foot in height. but i gained an inch.  thats not normal. that isnt achieved unless you really work for it.  and i never claimed cardio gave me that muscle, all i said is its vital to healthy dense muscle and i doubt i would have made the gains i did without it.  and as i said earlier, it all depends on what he wants. i said if he wants to gain density, then he needs cardio, if he just wants bulky mass then skip the cardio.

How is it "completely false"? Maybe I'm missing something here? I never said that doing cardio would completely halt muscle growth, just that an undernourished person wanting to put on the most mass could do with dropping cardio as it increases a caloric deficit.

I stopped growing, height-wise at about 16. I've 'filled out' since then, putting on about 10 kilos with a fairly low b.m.i. Almost all of my mates have gotten a lot stockier between the ages spoken of. I find a lot of people follow this pattern. Again, I really don't see anything incredible in 25 pounds over 4 years.

I'm training for overall fitness and I'm not looking to put on mass for cosmetic reasons.

So I'll still be doing cardio stuff. I am still getting stronger and i feel much more fit when I'm doing cardio stuff. The cardio seems to help me get into the zone for lifting heavy shit too.

I don't want to end up with all this mass that i can't even use because my cardio sucks.

"health" or "fitness" to me includes having strong cardio while still being strong.

I'm getting interested in the CrossFit style of doing things because it's exactly what I'm trying to do.
