How long for grains?
    #950673 - 10/10/02 06:19 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

How long does it normally take to simmer grains till they are ready to be jared? It has been a lil while now, and they are still not squishing.

Nononono

Dont simmer, err you can, but its hard to get things perfect.

Best thing to do, well if you have the time: Soak grain overnight in water, about an inch of water over the grain.

Strain, and just add to jars. When you PC them, it will be perfect.

You can simmer them, but only for a little while...you DONT want them to become squishy or explode...thats why you get the kernels of millet and rye with the hull still on them. The exploding opens the door to contamination, bacteria and clumping.

Also, make sure you rinse your grain 3 times at least before loading into the jars. I think that has been the best change in my preperation to keep contams away! !

Good luck, and have fun with your grains ...

I simmer my grains on a low heat for about 30 mins or until I see one or 2 graisn starting to explode.
Rinse thoroughly to prevent the grain from continuining cooking and to clean off any unwanted cote or crap like that.

I agree with AngryShroom. Don't cook em, just soak em overnight, rinse & drain WELL, then fill jars 3/4 full, add internal filter material & PC.

Which ever works I guess.
I`ve never had problems with simmering my grain.
But presoaking isn`t a bad idea.

I just did this, followed your tek to a T (not sure if it was your tek origionally, but thats neither here nor there.) And after PC'ing, the birdseed seemed loose, like if I tipped the jar diagonially, the grains on the top would move. Is that alright?

yes that`s perfect.
After pcing you should shake your jars, some don`t but I like to to get the grain all loose and seperated. Otherwise I find it stays in a solid block like pf jars and I don`t like that one bit.
So when you innoculate the solution has a good surface area and air holes to colonise nicely.

Yeah, like Chris Rock advised, I'd never hit a quart jar full of grain, but I'll sure as hell shake the shit out of one. Thanks Derayld.

Yup, that is fine . Shake the hell out of them. The seed on top gets a little dry from PC'ing. Shaking them, mix's the wetter seed on the bottom with the top. That makes a perfect mix.
