Hygrometers make me moist?

Hello,

This is the first time I have posted in the forums...be gentle and wise besides.
Well, it's come round to that time of year again. The Alaska State Permanent Fund has been issued to all umpteen hundred thousand Alaskan residents. For those who don't know, the PFD is an allotment set aside by the oil companies to offset their pillaging of our natural resources.
Since I had the money (1500 dollars of it), I was thinking of purchasing a hygrometer and man are there a bevy of hygrometers. My question is this: Most high quality hygrometers are accurate to 80% humidity, but if the requirements are 90 to 100 percent, is it even worth it to buy a hygrometer when it won't accurately meaure? And beyond this, are there any hygrometers that you would recommend?

I wouldn't waste money on a hygrometer. Just use perlite. If there's condensation on the walls of your terrarium then it's humid enough!

In the digital realm there is a steep cost/benefit curve. 
This model for instance, is around $40, and accurate within 5% (up to rH 99%) for humidity and within a degree or two for temperature.  It also records daily high and low which is a NICE feature if you don't have a well controlled terrarium.  To get a digital hygrometer with an accuracy of around 2% (up to rH 100%), you will have to spend as much as $500. 

Properly calibrated, an analog hygrometer can give you accuracy of 2% (up to 80%-90% rH) for $12, or 3% (up to 100% rH) for $120. 

I'd go with a cheaper digital therm/hygro combo or a professional analog hygrometer.  If you are willing to spend $500 on a hygrometer, don't.  Spend $325 on a humidistat instead to create precise humidity in any growing environment.  Fungi Perfecti has a good supply of both options.

Hygrometers are not needed. Temperature is more important in my opinion...Well, if your doing cakes its especially easy to keep your humidity high.

This seems to be turning into a case of the farmer vs. the scientist. If you take a more "scientific" by-the-book approach to cultivation, you will probably benefit from using a well-calibrated hygrometer (emotionally if not mycologically). If you take the approach of the "farmer," then you will be better off eyeing it, learning from your mistakes, and developing an intuitive understanding.

I don't mean to overcomplicate the issue or insult anyone, I just thought this was an interesting trend I have been seeing for a while on these boards.

I mean, I could see how one would benefit from using it in the first grows, to get a handle on what its supposed to look like, and what not. But after a few grows you'll realize that you really dont need one, and you do it just by how damp things look and how the mycelium is growing.....
