no they suck, water build up inside rendering screen unreadable, plus they just aren't very accurate over 75% RH

Yeah that looks better. Make sure it's not made in China, (is teh sux) and that it's adjustable. Wrap it in a wet paper towel for an hour, then adjust it to read 99%. then it's accurate and ready to go.

exact guy I got mine from, only problem is it mount via a magnet that connects to a metal disc glued to the back-the glue sucks I had to use gorilla glue to make mine stand up to the High humidity. You can calibrate it, cheap, accurate, and free ship. A+

a flat head screw in the backside, use search as there are many (different) ways people calibrate.

Calibration - wrap hygrometer in a wet paper towel for an hour, than adjust the dial to read 100% right after you take the towel off.
I got my hygrometer at the reptile section of Petsmart in the terrarium accessories area. It was not calibratable, but I did the towel thing and it read 100% so It works for me. Otherwise ebay or the like works. I tried smoke shops, but they were clueless. One dude tried to sell me the digital hygrometer out of his swisher humidor

The reading arm is attached to a coil inside the casing, which can be manipulated.

all hydrometers must be checked occasionally just to make sure, because they fall out of wack over time. I do the overkill thing and calibrate mine before every grow. hell, it's easy, so why not do it?

oh so you cant leave the hygrometer on the perlite leaning against the wall of your FC? I probably wouldve just placed a piece of aluminum under it.
doesnt need to be attached to the wall does it?

No, you can leave it on the perlite if you can still easily read it. Don't let it touch your cakes though, they'll get bruised or worse, contaminated. Try to wipe it down with isopropyl alcohol before you put it in, and anytime you touch it, to keep contaminants away from your precious babies. But I used to do that with cakes, so it can work fine.
Putting it on the side is not needed unless you start doing bulk instead of cakes. If you do that, then you definitely don't put it on the substrate, because that's your "cake."

I bought that same exact one from Walmart for 6 bucks.
Piece of crap. Didn't last a week in the humidity, even on a piece of aluminum foil.
I have a much better one now.

when you do the wet paper towel method to calibrate the hygrometer, do u place the wet towels and hygrometer inside a plastic bag or inside something to prevent the paper towels from drying out?
or do you just leave it out in the open for the next hour?

shouldn't matter either way. I'd wait an hour to be safe, but if you're sure, you're sure.

yea i opened it up, turned it around backwards, and calibrated it too 100. seems fine now but was wondering since i turned it around all the way, is it putting to much force on the coil to give inaccurate readings?

If you re-do the same calibration tek and get 100 you should be good. There is also another tek floating around to get a 75% reading-something to do with salt i think. If you can find that and it reads 75 then you know everything is just peachy.

ok, so i did the salt calibration tek but the only problem is that i ran out of salt in the process. so instead of 1 full cup of salt, i was short by maybe 1/4 cup of salt. but i still added a full 1/4 cup of water to the salt making it a bit watery than just the consistency of wet sand.
since i didnt use as much salt and more water in ratio to the actual measurements, would this lead me to get a lower reading instead of 75 rH. cuz my hygrometer is reading at 60 rH

also i already had calibrated it with the wet towel trick. and when i do the wet towel now itll read at 100 rH. so im thinking the amount of salt i was lacking perhaps is giving me the low rH reading?

Sounds like you have your hygrometer calibrated correctly to me.

so it giving a 60 rH reading is correct from the situation?

I would think so. Now if it read above 75 then you would have a prob, but lower would indicate that when it reads 100 that the air is properly humidified.

No, the ONLY reliable hygrometers for what you're doing are called "hair" hygrometers. They use a human or synthetic hair to measure RH. Decent ones start at $55, and they go up from there.
There are ones for like $35 or so, but be careful, these are usually designed to be accurate in the 60%-75% range, not the 90%-100% range.
THE MOST IMPORTANT thing to know is this: when using a hygrometer in extremely moist or dry conditions, you HAVE to expose it to the OTHER extreme for 10-12 hours a day. This is the ONLY way to keep it accurate.
I bought 2 so I can always have one where I need it, and the other one sitting in like 30%Rh. I just swap them out every 12-24 hrs.
Good luck.
