Just thought this was kinda cool, and after a short search hadn't seen anything like this yet. I'm sure it's been done, but I was kinda proud of it.

only thing i might have done different is had the edge pointing down so contaminants didn't get in as easily. Looks good though.

Which edge should be pointing down?
This is obviously made out of a water bottle. I cut a section out of the middle, and the top part sits inside of the bottom part which is filled with perlite. This is succeptable to contams?
Was just kind of a side experiment, but would obviously like to improve on it if I could.

i wasn't saying it would contaminate, i'm just saying i would have done it slightly different. i would have cut it so the top fit over the bottom, vs. having the top fit into the bottom. the bottom would be a little taller, and the top a little shorter. I'm sure what you have will work fine though.

The biggest reason that I did it the way that I did, is because it was hard to cut the bottle so it would sit PERFECTLY flat on a table. Which would have allowed in contams anyway. Do contams travel through wet perlite often? Would be a good basic to know. Thanks.

to insure no contams via the perlite, just mix in some peroxide or bleach with it

to help with cutting, whip out the masking tape or duct tape and make yourself a guide to follow with the blade knife.. it helps keep it straight.

I use a jigsaw for the lids of all my bulk tubs. Cuts a hole like a jigsaw through plastic

I'm pretty handy. I did the guide thing, however it's hard to cut a PERFECTLY straight cut all the way around the jug and have it sit air-tight-flat on the table. Plus this plastic is very hard, and somewhat brittle. I don't know if it would stand up to a jigsaw, unless you had a pretty fine-toothed bit.
What I did is use a piece of cardboard, cut to the length I wanted then went around the jug, taped it to the jug and then scored it with a razor knife. Got a pretty darn good score.
Then I cut the jug in half in the area that I didn't care about. then notched the rest of the plastic up to my score, and broke it out piece by piece. Took a little while but it worked well...
As for the perlite, I did put peroxide in it.
(not ranting, just detailing.)
