DON`T link to the picture directly!
If you want or need to post more pictures than your daily limit, get an account with one of the many free hosting companies, upload the pictures there, and link them to your post.
You can find many free picture webspace providers here:

What about pictures that are already uploaded on the server? (A pic you have previously used, so you don't upload it again) They don't get automaticly thumbnailed if you are going to use them again.

Nothing happens with them. Those are and stay as they are.
But IF there is a thumbnail created(as it has been since the end of september with every upoload), then the picture should be posted with the HTML code.

Okay, but if I upload something today and post the thumbnail, then want to post the same pic tomorrow (off my upload list), it's going to be full size. Is this okay, or is there a way to thumnail an already uploaded pic each time you use it? I apologize if I'm missing something.  Thanks Anno

You can lookup the HTML code for your picture here:
http://www.shroomery.org/thumbnail.php
If you can see the thumbnail at the bottom of the page, then a thumbnail to your picture exists and you can post the provided HTML code.
If not, then not.

I dont get it....
If I open a page with a thumbnail and click on it another page opens with the full picture. Now youve got two of the same picture being opened every time. How does this save bandwith?

When you open the post, the thumbnail picture is opened, the size of it is around 1/10th of the original image.
If the picture is new for you, and the thumbnail looks promising, you might click on it, then it opens in the new window as big picture.
If you open the post next time, you will already know the poicture, and you won?t click on the image again.
Thus, instead of loeading the same big picture everytime you open the post, you will open the big picture only 1 time.

What if you want a big picture to pop up for artistic effect? Would it be ok as long as it's not too large a file, and how large would too large be?

If you want to post picture for artistic effect, there is allways the possibility to save the pictures on an external server, and link the picture to your post using the
[image]URL[/image]
tags.
What you need is to get an account with one of the many free hosting companies, upload the pictures there, and link them to your post.
You can find many free webspace providers here:
www.freewebspace.net
Also this is a host:
www.imagemagician.com
Att: a few of the providers (phisically) block external linking.
Trial and error is requied to determine this.

Oh yeah, I forgot I had web hosting space with my DSL service. I was using it when my uploads to the shroomery weren't working. Thanks for reminding me!

I see. Strange - I'm copying / pasting exactly as you've done. It's not as if the instructions aren't clear to me. I usually use Netscape but have tested here using Explorer - it's doing something different, but still not doing right. Go figure.
Do you have any suggestions for a work-around that will allow me to post pics without hogging up too much space?

Ok, I found what?s causing the problem: For some reason, when you copy and paste the code to your post, spaces are added into the code.
Like here:
<a href="https://files.shroomery.org/files/100602-15/54001-cup-o-gold.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="/forums/thumbs/100602-15/54001-thumb_cup-o-gold.jpg"></a>
In your case, after <a href=" and after "><img src=" there is a space, which DOESN`T BELONG THERE.
Because of that , the HTML code isn?t interpreted in a correct way.
Now, the output of the script doesn?t contain those spaces, so there is a problem, for whatever reason, at your end.
What you can do is, when you copy and paste the code, to check if there are spaces at the ends of the lines withing the code and delete them.

All my pictures are way to big in size. About 300kb the shroomery server only alows for 100kb. When I tried to upload one of my large pictures I got sent to another page saying if I would like to upload the picture then make it smaller.
I don't know how.
I clicked on the undelined word "smaller" and tried again but got a script timed out message.
HELP!

how do you put pics in your sig. ive tried but it just post the code and not the picture, i wonder if im leaving something out or posting the wrong thing or maybe its too big or something. its a white rabbit that dances, maybe its not able to be re done or whatever . its a gif... i dont know. maybe its not compatable. any ideas?

I think, posting picutures should be tolerated only in posting pictures forum. Cause in this way forum looses its transparency with posting shit. this is producing annoying atmosphere. All fine sites removed that option, cause it makes no sense.

Anno, another question. I manually placed the tags into this thread of mine because they were links, as per what's not a go'er as per saving bandwidth ect...

Now that we have ways to delete files.. is it possible we can up the max upload limit just a HAIR... like maybe just anotherr 100KB..
I try to help a lot of users out teaching how to hyperlink pics elsewhere ands tuff, but some people just dont get it, or dont do teh work and it just sucks. a measly extra 100kb or so would still be pretty minimal load and space wise...
And there is still that nice raid array in that rack not being used.....

dear mndfreeze, with the existance of www.photobucket.com and www.imageshack.us these problems shouldn't exist. www.imageshack.us even offers you instant creation of the thumbnail code that you insert into the post, just like at the Shroomery upload.

my avatar sits about 6 inches higher then shroomery does. I'm not worried about MY space.
I also donated a pretty nice RAID array for dirt cheap thats also in that rack.
I am not an admin, nor claim to be, but I do know your network, physically and otherwise and I know what equipment is there. consider using some of that nice equipment and giving us poor measly users a bit more space for the uneducated.

Again, with the existance of www.photobucket.com and www.imageshack.us these problems shouldn't exist. www.imageshack.us even offers you instant creation of the thumbnail code that you insert into the post, just like at the Shroomery upload.

I'd feel safer knowing my questionable pics would be locally on teh shroomery, more so then some random service provider.. who knows what they scan through or how searhable their archives are.

You can upload your "questionable" pictures to the Shroomery, why not.
This poses a question though: if they are so questionable that you don*t want the poeple to see them, why uplaod it to anywhere really?

Shroomerys pictures do not get spidered on search engines like google, etc.
Its not about not wanting them seen, its aout choosing who can or cannot see it.
But all I really wanted was a bit more on the upload per day limit. There really is no logical reason why not.

Quite some. When we switched to this system nearly 2 years ago, it saved around 25% of the total bandwith if I remember correctly.

Yes I think that 25% figure is about right. HTML pages are small to begin with and we send them with gzip compression which reduces them by an additional 75%. Most of the images used on the site have been optimized for filesize, and many are automatically cached by your browser. Images on the BB use a very large amount of bandwidth compared with other parts of the page. I know it may sometimes seem that things like image thumbnails are arbitrarily implemented by the admins to make your life harder, but there are usually good reasons behind them. Please continue using thumbnails on the BB as much as possible - next to patronizing our sponsors this is actually one of the biggest ways you can help us out with our expenses.

Last I remember, bandwidth is capped on a flat non burstable setup. You guys never even hardly hit your peak during peak hours.
I really think this should be re-looked into and logically thought out. There is a nice sexy raid array sitting there unused still, and a cap on bandwidth which rules out that has a valid opposing reason... what else?
I'm not sure if the max size of an image, vs the max total uploaded is seperate, but I am only asking about the total daily upload, not any sort of max size. I hav eno problems with making people not upload 1 meg images files, but 400k a DAY is a bit obscene.
