    #941553 - 10/08/02 03:23 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

I dont have a pressure cooker so im doing the jars in boiling water method. My question is once the water comes to a boil do i remove the lid on top of the jars or keep it on for the 1.5 hours?

keep it on, and make sure it's not a violent, sloshing boil, that will splash water all over your jars.

Keep it on, I've never boiled them for longer than an hour. Oh, I also leave the lid on the pot until the pot has cooled down to the point that you can touch it without getting burned.

You don't have to put them in the water. Depending on how big your pot is, you won't be able to sterilize that many jars. I don't have a PC, and I've made over 24 jars with no contams by steaming them on a high boil for 1 hour. Just get a pot, with extra stackable steamer trays. You can fit in a whole lot of jars at once. Just make sure they don't cool too slowly, I lost one because the jar cracked and broke.

Also, like the other person said, 30 minutes will work. 45 too, but depending on how much boiling you have, a very low boil is needed, an hour and more could burn out the nutrients in the jars. also make sure to cover the jars so no extra water gets in them. good luck, you'll love the experience

I'm not really sure about the boiling tek, but steaming has always worked for me

Heres a ghetto tek
put tinfoil on the lids of the jars.  Unscrew the lids HALFway so that they are not falling off and not really tight(steam has to be able to get in the jars and pressure out of the jars)  Get a pie tray, punch small or medium holes in the top.  Make 4 holes along the sides of the tray towards the bottom..

set that the other way in the pot and fill with some water.  put the lid on and steam for a while.  Thats a really cheap way of making a steamer so that the jars are not touching the bottom of the water or having water bubbled in them
GL!
